What Is Our Fraternity?
Phi Sigma Phi could be a significant part of your well rounded college experience. Our fraternity is an organization where you can become involved and develop the skills to complement the education you receive. Certain skills can only be mastered through practice, and Phi Sigma Phi will give you an opportunity to develop as much as you desire. You will learn such things as organization, time management, communication, effectively working with others toward a common goal, and developing leadership skills. As well as having the opportunity o hold an elected office within Phi Sigma Phi, many of our members are elected officers and leaders in other organizations on campus.
We in Phi Sigma Phi consider the worth of the individual to be most important to our fraternity. Chapter activities are designed to develop the great store of potential that is inherent in college men and to those who would make the most of themselves, Phi Sigma Phi extends a hearty welcome!
A fraternity house, a badge, a crest or other emblems are not what make a fraternity. Rather it is the things not seen: courage, loyalty, honesty, dedication, brotherhood, and intelligence. These are what make the fraternity and the man. The vital factors in choosing a fraternity are the values and personalities of the men and how they will merge with the prospective member to complement the whole. The age and scope of the National Fraternity, a chapter house, and association with who are the prominent students on campus should be of secondary concern.
Looking Ahead
While there are many old traditions cherished by members of Phi Sigma Phi, new ideas are constantly sought and welcomed. The fraternity world has evolved along with the rest of the world, and it is the forward-thinking men and organizations that will prosper throughout the end of the century. We in Phi Sigma Phi expect suggestions and ideas from our members. Activities and events just don't spontaneously occur, the must be planned for and successfully executed. Epsilon Beta Chapter has had memorable events in the past, and we plan to continue this trend for the future.
Looking Back
Phi Sigma Phi is relatively new in the vast fraternity world, but the foundations for our fraternity go very back to the early 1900's. From relatively humble beginnings at a small Midwestern teacher's college, we have grown to where our fraternity now reaches from the Midwest to the Eastern Mountain states. Phi Sigma Phi has never and will never sacrifice quality for size. We seek only those men of distinction and character who will be an asset to their community, their college and their fraternity.
All chapters of Phi Sigma Phi are given distinctive chapter names to recognize their significance as individual chapters, while remaining dedicated to the National Fraternity. The Epsilon Beta Chapter here at Wright State, is one of the newer fraternities at WSU. However, our history goes far back and we are proud of the leadership role we have played through the succeeding years. Epsilon Beta Chapter has numerous national fraternity awards as well as winning many WSU inter-fraternity competitions.
Facts About Fraternities
Fact:
Being in a fraternity will not guarantee you a job when you graduate, but it can provide you job opportunities otherwise not available. Employers not only want men who have good grades, but also men who work well with others. They also want team players and leaders. In fact, seventy-five percent of the nation's leading executives are fraternity members. Sixty-eight percent of the men listed in "Who's Who" are fraternity men.
Fact:
You need to consider all aspects of your college life, not just academics. As a student, you should be entitled to more than just going to class and studying. It's true your primary responsibility is to learn, but you are also expected to develop those shills necessary to prepare you for entry in the adult world. A fraternity can help round out your college experience by providing structured social situations, workshops and conferences on personal growth and development, opportunities to participate in charity projects within the community, and gives you the setting for making life-long friendships.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q: Aren't fraternities just for snobs and cliques?
A: Some fraternities that were founded at the "East Coast" colleges were meant just for the elite social register types. But when Phi Sigma Phi's founders joined together, they were determined to be a fraternity for all college men, not just a "privileged" few.
Q: Isn't it expensive to be in a fraternity?
A: Some fraternities charge some hefty fees to join and be a member. Phi Sigma Phi is proud of the fact we have some of the lowest fees in the entire fraternity world! In fact, we have THE LOWEST dues of any Greek organization on campus. All our costs are explained up front and, there are no "hidden costs" later on. However, you will still get all the services expected with a national fraternity, plus much, much more.
Q: Do you treat your new members like we see on the news and in the movies:
A: We have all heard the horror stories of initiation activities from some fraternities. Phi Sigma Phi has very strict standards of conduct towards our Associate Members (NOT pledges), and hazing in any form is strictly prohibited. Our Associate Member Education Program is a period of learning about the campus, about the local chapter and about the Phi Sigma Phi national fraternity.
Q: Don't fraternity guys just sit around drinking and partying all the time.
A: While Phi Sigma Phi is a social fraternity, we participate in numerous activities like Student Government, intramural sports, service projects and charity events, in addition to enjoying social events.
