History of Phi Sigma Phi:
The history of Phi Sigma Phi begins not so much with an actual date, but rather with the evolution of ideals and dedication to independence. On July 30, 1988 in South Bend, Indiana, Phi Sigma Phi was formally organized to serve as a national organization of college men who wished to share in the spirit of true friendship and brotherhood. Years of fraternity experience, dedication and know-how laid its solid foundation.
Although there was strong support for the new fraternity from many colleges and alumni, the first years of Phi Sigma Phi's existence were difficult. During the years 1988 through 1990, the National struggled to survive and expansion was non-existent. Establishing new national programs, publications, visitations, and a budget were top priorities and took most of the new National 's energy and efforts.
The dawn of the 1990's saw Phi Sigma Phi settle into its position as one of the newest and strongest national fraternities. The initial turmoil of the 1980's gradually settled and the desire and drive to expand was put into action. The first such opportunity was on the Michigan State University campus (East Lansing, Michigan) where a transfer student began a colony in 1989. This group was officially recognized by the National Council as Epsilon Alpha Colony on February 17, 1990. Following Michigan State, another colony was started in 1991 at Western Michigan University (Kalamazoo, Michigan). In 1994, Epsilon Beta Colony at Wright State University (Dayton, Ohio) was founded and later chartered on April 20, 1996.
In January 1997, Epsilon Alpha at Michigan State University became an alumni chapter of Phi Sigma Phi.
In August 1997 at our annual National Conclave, we welcomed Kappa Colony at the University of Wisconsin-Steven's Point and Epsilon Delta Colony at Bluefield State College in Bluefield, West Virginia.
In addition to the expansion plans, other programs were developed by the National Fraternity to recognize excellence in our members. Yearly leadership seminars, scheduled visitation programs and a scholarship program and grants are now available to all Phi Sigma Phi Brothers who excel in these every day activities of academic and fraternity life.
These Founding Fathers who created Phi Sigma Phi believed in a unique and different fraternity experience. Their drive, determination, and dedication live today in Phi Sigma Phi students and alumni who make the every-day sacrifice to perpetuate our great fraternity experience.
The History of Epsilon Beta Chapter
Epsilon Beta Colony was started at Wright State University in June 1994. These founding individuals believed that a new and different fraternity chapter was needed at Wright State.
Epsilon Beta Chapter was eventually chartered almost two years later on April 20, 1996 by the National Conference. National Vice-President David Prueher presented our Chapter President, Ryan Monroe, with the charter that signified our admittance into Phi Sigma Phi National Fraternity as Epsilon Beta Chapter.
