In the 1990-91 year, Brian Crowe started a group on campus called the Gay & Lesbian Student Union. Most of their focus was on "ACT-UP"-style activism. They chalked messages on walls across campus (silence=death, etc.) and discussed how to better spread their message.
In Summer Quarter 1991 Dawn Wallace recreated the group and named it Lambda Union.
In academic year 1991-92 Lambda Union officially came to life. Activities were initially limited to presentations, condom distribution (in coordination with the Dayton AIDS agencies and their representative, Bruce Brown) and discussion panels. On-Campus incidents of harassment of the more "out" members occurred but the WSU Public Safety office made it clear that harassment would not be tolerated, working closely with the students to handle the complaints.
Lambda Union continued to grow and solidify its university presence over the years.
In the 2002-2003 academic year, Lambda Union evolved to meet the changing needs of technology and the growing number of programs and events the group sponsored. A Webmaster position was added to the board, as well as three new appointed positions: Panel Director, Historian, and Safe Space Coordinator. The Community Outreach Program debuted, dealing with education and advocacy at local area high schools with the distribution of educational packets.
Beginning with the 2004-2005 academic year, the Lambda Union changed its name, becoming the Rainbow Alliance. The name change helped to improve campus visibility/name recognition.
WSU's Rainbow Alliance remains active and in full force, one of Wright State University's most successful campus organizations
