The Naihanchi Series of Kata

Detailed Descriptions of Individual Kata

Overview

The Naihanchi series of kata are interesting because all moves are performed along a single line from side to side. This linear movement encourages the student to focus on training the lower parts of the body, and also to refine hip movement to deliver power without the forward momentum of the body to help. Students at Wright State learn the first Naihanchi kata while at green belt rank.

History

The history of the Naihanchis is unfortunately unknown. They have been used as beginner katas, prior to the invention of the Pinan series. Many styles of karate are known to use the Naihanchi series.
