katas and martial apps |
Kata are prearranged sets of movements, a series of kicks and hand techniques in various stances. Kata are used within most martial arts styles as a method of practicing basic motions, focusing attention, learning to breathe correctly, and studying rhythm and power. Master Nagamine states:
Kata can be described as a systematically organized seies of defensive and offensive techniques performed in a sequence against one or more imaginary opponents, and given a symmetical, linear pattern.
There are 18 kata in Matsubyashi Shorin-Ryu, grouped as follows:
WSU Karate classes focus on kata study, emphasizing precision of techniques and performance with appropriate speed and power for each kata. During each class, each student performs all of the kata that he/she knows. This repetition ensures that students know the kata movements well enough to focus on improving the performance of the kata.
In WSU Karate, groups of kata movements are considered to be maps, describing a defense against an attack. These are called martial applications. An important part of understanding a kata is understanding the applications described by the kata movements.
Visit the Martial Applications page for more details and some examples.
