When Alphonse and Edward Elric attempt to resurrect their mother using the forbidden science of human alchemy, the process goes awry. Ed is left with only one leg and arm, while Al's body is destroyed completely, leaving his soul bound to a previously lifeless suit of armor. The boys agree to give up on their attempt at resurrection, and instead set out to find the legendary philosopher's stone, their only hope of restoring their original bodies.
