UAB HIRING FOR 07-08

Now hiring an all-star cast for the 2007-2008 University Activities Board!!!

The UAB is seeking motivated and qualified individuals for next year's UAB Executive Team.  The University Activities Board is Wright State's premier programming board.  As one of the university's largest student organizations, it is in charge of producing and promoting a wide variety of campus programs.  UAB programs a plethora of both large events and small, including Fall Fest, May Daze, the Kuumba Black Arts Festival, Nutter Center concerts, DDR tournaments, dances, movie nights, comedy shows, and much more!  The UAB holds programs made for students by students.

An executive role in UAB is a highly rewarding experience, full of challenges and opportunities in your professional and personal life.  Besides gaining valuable leadership experience, UAB executive officers work in a fast-paced environment to coordinate successful events by leading event committees and collaborating with other organizations on campus.  They learn how to oversee projects and execute each step necessary from start to finish in each one.  They often network with other campus leaders to foster working relationships and make an event even bigger.  And, this is all on top of the opportunities you have to organize some of Wright State's largest and most electrifying campus entertainment!

Positions available for the 2007-08 school year:
•           President
•           Vice President
•           Marketing & Public Relations Chair
•           Finance Chair
•           Major Events Chair
•           Themes & Traditions Chair
•           Weekend Events Chair
•           Series Events Chair

A description of each position is available in our application packet, as well as on our website www.wright.edu/uab.

We are inviting all interested students to apply.  All executive positions are paid, with stipends ranging between half-tuition and two-thirds-tuition.  Previous involvement in UAB is not necessary, though it is a factor in comparing between the qualifications of our candidates.  Candidates are invited to become a member of the UAB Street Team to get involved in this year's array of activities and participate in one of our five committees.

If you have any questions, please contact Mike George (george.43@wright.edu).

Are you tired of having nothing to do on campus?  Well, stop complaining, and take this opportunity to make a difference at Wright State.  Step up and put the U in UAB!

MY FRESHMAN YEAR AUTHOR TO VISIT WSU

First Year Experience Lecture Series

The University College at Wright State University proudly welcomes Cathy Small as guest lecturer as part of our First Year Experience Lecture Series. In 2002, Dr. Small (in her 50’s) decided to enroll as a college freshman and walk in the shoes of her own students. Small moved out of her house and into the dorms, taking a full load of courses, joining student activities, and eating in the student dining hall. Living and taking classes for a year as an undergraduate was the basis for her book “My Freshman Year,” an anthropological account of student culture. What she found out profoundly changed her as a professor, and will be the topic of her talk.

Cathy Small has been a professor of cultural anthropology at Northern Arizona University for 17 years. For the past 25 years, her primary research and writing— includes her book “Voyages” used by more than 100 universities-- have focused on immigration and transnational issues. She is the recipient of numerous local awards, including her university’s Teacher of the Year and the Faculty Mentor Awards, and has served as a Faculty Fellow and a member of the PEW Higher Education Roundtable. Nationally, she is the recipient of the Praxis Award for Excellence in Applied Anthropology and the national Points of Light award for co-founding the Pipeline mentoring and college scholarship program for low-income youth. Her program received the Governor's Special Recognition award as well as first prize for Best Educational Practices in Post-Secondary Education in the state of Arizona.

Join us for this exciting presentation on March 6th, 2007 in the Apollo Room from 3:30-

5:00 p.m. Dr. Small will be available to sign books following her presentation. You may

purchase “My Freshman Year” in the Wright State University Bookstore.

FREE LEADERSHIP TRAINING!!!

February 27th 2007, 012 Rike Hall, 4 p.m.

Ms. Katie Deedrick, Encouraging the Heart

It is so often taught how to handle situations when something goes wrong, but what about when something goes right? Recognizing individual and team accomplishments frequently is often overlooked, but can be the tool that causes group members to contribute their best to an organization and return for future projects. This crucial presentation will show you the importance of effectively encouraging your members, recognizing contributing talents and identifying future leaders!

CAMPUS IDOL SHOW

March 2nd
6:00 p.m.-9:00p.m.

101 Fawcett Hall

Finalists from the auditions will perform this night for a live audience who will be able to vote for their favorite performer. The finalist who gets the most votes will be our Campus Idol.

The winner will get a $50 gift card, a 30 minute performance slot at May Daze (which drew over 11,000 people last year), and possibly an interview with our campus radio station, WWSU.

For this show, the finalists MUST provide their own music. This can be done by bringing in a karaoke CD or by having someone play the keyboard for you (keyboard must be provided by you or the person  playing for you). If you do not have a way to get music, we have a limited list of songs available. You will want to pick a good song for you, so our list of songs should be used as a last resort. We will have this list available at all of the auditions.

The show is free for anyone who would like to watch. We are not publicizing it outside of WSU, but if you have friends or family you would like to bring, feel free to.

This all sounds nice, but you may not want to sing…there are other things you can do. We are looking for help with every day of this event. We need judges, registration people, stage manager, and many other positions available. If you know someone who may want to audition, please forward this to them.

If you know someone who may want to audition, please forward this to them.

If you think you’re the next Campus Idol, come show us what you've got!
