UNITED WAY'S DAY OF ACTION

United Way’s Day of Action is Friday, June 5th.  This is a day where we pair volunteers from the community with non profit organizations that need a little manpower.  For example, we need some painting done at the Boy Scout Camp, buses washed for Greene CATS (the small disability buses), cleaning out garages at the Visitation Center, Planting flowers at the Red Cross Shelter, painting classrooms at a Daycare in Fairborn.  Great opportunities and a wide variety of activities!

If you or anyone you know is interested in volunteering please contact:

Survivors Offering Support (SOS), an informal network of female survivors of violence at Wright State, will be distributing free t-shirts advocating against sexual assault beginning Wednesday, April 22nd.The shirts are designed to promote awareness about sexual assault, correct sexual assault myths and misinformation, and motivate action to end sexual assault on our campus.  There are two styles of t-shirts. One t-shirt will deliver the message that a “real man” can take “no” when it comes to sex. The second style t-shirt will deliver the messages that rape is not sex and that people who speak out against sexual assault are not anti-sex. Each t-shirt will be accompanied by a flier providing information about sexual assault, including statistics, resources, laws and policies.

The t-shirts are free for all students who commit to wearing the shirt on campus on Tuesday, April 28th and Wednesday, April 29th.  T-shirts can be picked up in the Women’s Center on the first floor of Millett Hall or from the office of Wright State Instructor Andrea Harris at 454 Millett Hall. Donations toward the cost of the shirts ($4 per shirt) will be gratefully accepted and can be made in cash when the shirt is picked up or online through the PayPal link at www.survivorsofferingsupport.us.

All donations will be used solely to cover the cost of the t-shirts. When the total cost of the t-shirts is covered, donations will no longer be accepted.  SOS is also hosting a “Speak Out Against Sexual Assault” in the Millett Hall Atrium at 8:00 pm on Wednesday, April 29th. The purpose of the Speak Out is to provide a space and opportunity for survivors and all those who care about ending sexual assault to speak openly about their experiences and their commitment to stopping the violence.

If you would like more details on SOS, the t-shirts, or the Speak Out, please contact Andrea Harris, SOS Faculty Liaison, at andrea.harris@wright.edu or Angela Koch, SOS Student Liaison, at koch.31@wright.edu. You can also visit www.survivorsofferingsupport.us.  SOS meets regularly throughout the year to provide a safe space for survivors to meet one another and share not only their experiences of violence but also their experiences of survival and healing.  From SOS there is no judgment, no disbelief, and no encouragement to minimize the harm that was done.  SOS knows that every survivor is a powerful individual who can help end the violence.
