Student groups at Wright State University are registered and advised regarding university administrative matters by the Office of Student Activities (775-5570). Any group of Wright State students wishing to establish an organization having a purpose that:
- is consistent with the purpose, regulations, and policies of Wright State University
- does not duplicate the purpose of another registered Wright State University student organization
The following are requirements to begin a WSU student organization
- Student Organization Planning Meeting: Contact Viki Harness, Administrative Assistant @ 775-5566.
- Officers: Each registered student organization is required to have at least two officers- a President and Treasurer. Creating other officer positions is encouraged, although not required. Both the President and Treasurer of an organization must be a Wright State University student, registered for at least one course during the quarter in which the office is held.
- Faculty/Staff Advisor: Each organization is required to choose a faculty or staff advisor from the university faculty or administrative staff. A newly registered student organization is required to have a faculty/staff advisor by their planning meeting. The responsibilities of the faculty/staff advisor are designated by the student organization itself, but often take the form of attending meetings and events, providing a non-student prospective on various issues, and providing advice and ideas on request. The advisor should be consulted when large sums of money are expended by the organization or when major changes are being made in the organization's constitutional by-laws.
- Organization Forms: Student organizations need to fill out and return the following forms including: Organization Update form, Anti-Hazing Agreement and Signature Card. Your Advisor's name and signature needs to be on all of these forms.
- Constitution: Each potential organization is required to submit a constitution in order to gain official status as a WSU student organization. This document may be brief or lengthy depending upon the goals of the organization and the amount of structure the organizers wish to impose on the organization. The constitution should contain the objectives of the organization, a membership clause including an affirmative action statement, a description of the offices of the organization and duties of each office, and any standing committees. The by-laws of the organization (the rules which govern the election of officers and other election procedures) may be included with the registration documents and should include a plan to replace officers for not fulfilling their duties.
- Membership: Membership in each registered student organization must be open to all students who meet the requirements for membership set forth in the constitution of the organization. Student organizations, in keeping with the University's commitment to affirmative action, may not exclude potential members on the basis of race, sex, color, religion, ancestry, national origin, age, disability, veteran status or sexual orientation.
House of Representatives
- Student Organizations are also required to attend bi-weekly meetings given by the House of Representatives. The House of Representatives is the governing body for student organizations on campus.
