A bias-related incident is any behavior or action directed toward an individual or group based upon actual or perceived identity characteristics or background, including but not limited to: race, sex (including gender identity/expression), color, religion, ancestry, national origin, age, disability, veteran status, military status, or sexual orientation. Such acts may result in creating a hostile environment and may have a negative psychological, emotional, or physical impact on an individual, group, and/ or community. Bias-related incidents occur without regard to whether the act is legal, illegal, intentional, or unintentional.

The Office of Equity and Inclusion provides a comprehensive set of services related to the university's affirmative action efforts to achieve equal opportunity. We work to eliminate inappropriate barriers and to correct the effects of past discrimination, whether intentional or not, in accordance with Federal and State law. Our services include policy development and updating of the Wright State University (WSU) Affirmative Action Plan, investigation of complaints, mediation of disputes, direction of formal dispute resolution procedure; advising officials and others about changing Affirmative Action (AA)/Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) law and requirements, consultation service for officials, campus groups, and members of the university community; training, and advocacy for AA/EEO policy and activity on campus. In addition, the Office of Equity & Inclusion recently issues an Open Letter to the Wright State University Campus. Here is a quote from that letter:
"This incident, coupled with the recent passage of anti-LGBTQ legislation, serve as examples that there are people and spaces that are unaccepting of different values, preferences, and ideologies. Please know that our office is not a part of this population. We are an office that stands in solidarity with the LGBTQ community. We support marriage equality and the rights of transgender individuals to use any restroom they wish. We support the right of LGBTQ people to human dignity and a life free from violence, sexual or otherwise."

There is a legal name change process with the university, the Social Security Administration, etc. However, there is also what is called a "preferred first name" at Wright State University. For example, if you wanted to be called "Cary Doe" instead of "Caroline Doe" or "Dana Smith" instead of "Dan Smith," you may have indicated that on your admissions form and it would it would be listed in the university directory and your outgoing e-mail as “Cary Doe” or "Dana Smith." Official documents will continue to read the full legal name, but internal docs will have the preferred name.
To add a preferred first name after you are a student, there is a two-step process. It is important to keep the steps in sequence.
- Go to the windows for the Office of the Registrar in the Student Union, show them a picture ID and ask to add a "preferred first name." This changes the listing in the Wright State directory to your preferred first name.
- Fill out an online form for CATS. It is very important that you check the box "Email change only." You should hand write a note on this form telling them you want no changes to your e-mail address or W number. You simply want to change the name on your outgoing e-mail to your preferred first name. They check with the Registrar's office that the preferred first name has been processed and then they make the change. You should have uninterrupted access to/service of your account.
