Strategic Plan

Goal 3
Extend our engagement with government, business, and nonprofits to focus on emerging areas of need.

Objective A:
Increase the opportunities for community engagement within the curriculum.

Lake Campus
Leaders in service
The Organizational Leadership (OL) Program at the Wright State University-Lake Campus links the campus and the community through service-learning activities as part of their Capstone Projects. Two students received a Best Practice Award from the Ohio Family Support Association for their development of "A Case Manager Tool Kit"; another student project was implemented on the regional and national level. The case management tool was developed as a part of the Capstone Project.

According to Linda Duesterhaus, administrator of Shelby County Job and Family Services, who had worked on this Capstone Project along with another student, Shannon Smith, "This project was extremely meaningful to our agency. Our department has been reduced in size and this tool was beneficial to keep our case managers current on the changes that occurred in medical enforcement. It is wonderful that we were allowed to pursue this endeavor as part of our organizational leadership degree.

I have to say that as a manager, I have benefited tremendously from my experience at Wright State Lake Campus. As I continue to lead my agency in tough financial times, I draw upon the knowledge gained in my education. Just this weekend, I was doing some research online. I accessed professional journals with ease because we had done this as part of our capstone."

Objective B:
Enhance WSU presence within the Miami Valley region and beyond in ways that are important to the community.

Boonshoft School of Medicine

Among nation's best consumer health information programs
The Dayton area's "Know Your Numbers" campaign received the Excellence in Health Information Award and the Healthy People 2010 award from the National Health Information Resource Center. These awards represent two of three major awards given by the National Health Information Resource Center. The campaign also received the Silver Award for the category "Total Health Information." These awards recognize Know Your Numbers as among the nation's best consumer health information programs. The area coalition is led by Richard Schuster, M.D., M.M.M., the Oscar Boonshoft chair and director of the Division of Health Systems Management. The Know Your Numbers campaign emphasizes the importance of knowing one's own blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, and waist measurement numbers. Know Your Numbers publishes information about scheduled local health screenings and general facts about heart health for the public.

College of Education and Human Services
Getting an early start
Early Childhood Education students at Wright State who are registered for EDE 230 (Early Childhood Education in a Diverse, Pluralistic Society) participate in a service learning project in conjunction with the West Carrollton School District in Moraine, OH. WSU students assist with the after-school reading and math tutoring program at Frank Nicholas Elementary School on a daily basis from September through June. This program is supported by a five-year renewable 21st Century Learning Center grant for $595,000 in partnership with WSU and the City of Moraine, and funded by the U.S. Department of Education.

Objective C:
Enhance the quantity and quality of dialogue with our various communities (e.g., multidisciplinary forums, think tanks, symposia, etc.)
