1. What is a STEM school?
STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math.
The Dayton Regional STEM School is one of 10 STEM schools in Ohio. With a solid understanding of STEM subjects, as well as others (English, History, Art etc.) and how they relate to the real world, the chance that students will succeed will increase and they will ultimately help the state of Ohio and the Dayton region progress and grow.
Over the years, we’ve gained a lot of insight into how students learn, and this has resulted in many positive changes in education, including a focus on STEM. This new school emphasizes hands-on/project-based education and being connected to professionals and internships with organizations in the real world, all of which is meaningful for kids.
2. Why is a STEM school needed?
Informed community, business, education and government leaders know that Ohio is facing some economic and workforce development challenges. The Dayton region needs to build and retain its talented young people. This starts with a relevant education that could lead to a college experience and/or opportunities in the work world.
This new school is inspired by three principles (the new three R’s) – Relevant: the work of school must connect to the real world and personal interests of students. Rigorous: school must be challenging in ways that develop students’ understanding and skills. Relationships: schools must be the right size and provide opportunities to connect students, parents, teachers, and the broader community in meaningful ways.
3. When did the Dayton Regional STEM School open?
The school opened August 17, 2009 with 93 ninth grade students from Clark, Greene, and Montgomery counties. The 2010-11 school year will have students in eighth, ninth, and tenth grades. Within a few years, the school will grow to a maximum of about 600 sixth through twelth grade students.
4. Where is the Dayton Regional STEM School be located?
The school is currently located at 3775 Pentagon Park Boulevard in Beavercreek, on the second floor of the Clark State Community College building.
