Dayton Regional Summer STEM Academy (DRSSA)

WHO:

WSU STEM Academy Faculty

High school juniors and seniors who have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, and who are considering careers in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and/or related disciplines, including teaching:

WHAT:

Dayton Regional Summer STEM Academy

A three-week residential program focusing on mathematics, combining direct algebra instruction with the application of mathematics in biology and engineering to demonstrate how real-world problems are solved. Technology in the form of personal response systems, scientific calculators, MATLAB, online learning, etc., will be integrated throughout. STEM-related tutoring and service learning opportunities at the three partner elementary “lab” schools, World of Wonder and Westwood Elementary Schools in Dayton, and St. Henry in Mercer County.


WHEN:

July 20–August 7, 2009, with follow-up academic year activities scheduled September through June 2010.

WHERE:

Wright State University, Clark State Community College, and Sinclair Community College

For three supervised weeks during the summer, students will experience the college lifestyle, residing in a WSU residential setting from Sunday night until they leave each Friday afternoon, returning home for the weekends. During the academy, students will receive instruction at Wright State, Clark State, and Sinclair.


WHY:

STUDY AND LEARN/study and earn

Study and learn about the STEM disciplines to earn high school credit and five college credit hours in college algebra as well as a participation stipend of $200 per week and an additional $100 for participation in follow-up activities throughout the academic year. Practice what you learn in one of the three partner elementary “lab” schools.


HOW:

Funded through the Ohio Board of Regents' initiative, The Regents STEM and Foreign Language Academies, DRSSA was proposed by Wright State University, Clark State Community College, and Sinclair Community College in collaboration with the 11 area schools and four corporate and industry partners, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base/AFRL, CompuNet Clinical Laboratories, AVETEC, and Tec^Edge.
