"INTERPRETING
ISSUES IN MENTAL HEALTH SETTINGS"

This teleconference is
presented by the Mental Health and Deafness Program at the Ellis Human
Development Institute of the School of Professional Psychology at Wright
State University. The Program is funded by the Ohio Department of Mental
Health. The mission of the program is to train mental health professionals
and students in working with the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing communities,
and to train interpreting professionals and students in working in mental
health settings.
This is the initial teleconference
of a series of conferences planned for the future. At least two tele-conferences
per school year are planned and future topics will be announced. Some
of the conferences will be focused on interpreting issues and CEU credits
are sought through OCRID for these conferences. Continuing Education credits
will be sought for professionals in psychology, counseling, social work
and psychiatry for future conferences. The second teleconference will
focus on issues for clinicians working with deaf clients. Following teleconference
topics will include deaf-blind issues and psychiatric issues.

Presenters and Topics:
Bryan Hraban: Attitudes toward mental health
settings and mental health professionals and Interpreter Code of Ethics.
Nancy Basil: Knowledge
of mental health
terminology, mental health paperwork, types of treatments, tests &
procedures. Professional Code of Ethics, interpersonal skills & understanding
group dynamics, understanding own biases and reactions, possible moral
conflicts, human personality, psychological, sociological and educational
aspects of deafness and
interpreter laws and legal rights.
Barb Dunaway: Skills
including assessing client’s language skills, adjusting communication
modes, developing trust with clients and professionals, educating clients
and professionals on how to properly use interpreters, problem solving
within code of ethics, managing stress levels, minimizing conflicts, recognizing
limits, advocacy role and limits of interpreter role.

The conference will involve
discussion of the wide variety of issues and concerns related to providing
interpreter services within a mental health context at the beginner level.
Attitudes, knowledge and skills required to interpret in this challenging
area.
