About the Interpreter
Program
The Mental Health and Deafness Program
(MHDP) trains local interpreters and interpreter practicum students to
work as professional interpreters in the mental health field. This is considered
a highly specialized area of training in that the interpreter must become aware
of language particular to the field as well as acquiring a basic understanding of theory
and intervention. The interpreter students work in a variety of contexts
within mental health including assessment, individual therapy, and couples and
family therapy.
Most of the interpreter students come from Sinclair
Community College's certification program in Manual Communication (MAC). The MAC program is a professional interpreting
training program designed to prepare individuals as competent and ethical
professionals in the field of Interpreting for the Deaf.
