Biographical Information

La Pearl Logan Winfrey, PhD is a professor the School of Professional Psychology, Wright State University, and Associate Dean of Clinical Training. A graduate of the State University of New York at Stony Brook, Dr. Winfrey also received advanced management training at the Summer Institute for Women in Higher Education Administration at Bryn Mawr College. She has many years of experience providing psychotherapy to diverse populations and, since 1990, has been involved in the education of doctoral students in schools of professional psychology. Dr. Winfrey is a past member of the Board of Directors of the National Association of Black Psychologists. She was President of the National Council of Schools and Programs of Professional Psychology and recently completed service on the Committee on Accreditation of the American Psychological Association (APA). In January 2008 she was appointed to the Advisory Board of APA’s Minority Fellowship Program.  Dr. Winfrey has taught graduate courses in race and ethnicity, systems of psychotherapy, psychotherapy integration, cognitive-behavioral theory and therapy, psychopathology, and practicum and professionalization seminars. Her scholarship areas include competency based education in psychology, developing multicultural competency, and mental health and higher education issues facing African American women.  Dr. Winfrey has developed and directed pre-doctoral internship programs and is the past recipient of a federal grant to develop school-community partnerships in multicultural clinical training. She has mentored many students over the years who are interested in diversity issues in mental health and education in professional psychology.  Grateful for her family support, Dr. Winfrey celebrated her 35th year of marriage in March 2008. She is the mother of a daughter and the grandmother of two girls.
