Internship Eligibility and Readiness

Eligibility Criteria to apply for Internship

  • Good academic standing
  • Cumulative GPA of at least 3.0
  • Completion of first three years’ required coursework
  • Passed the Clinical Comprehensive Examination (CCE) by 8/31/09
  • Completion of 2 years of practicum (at least 1400 hours)
  • Placement and registration for the 3rd practicum
  • Completion of 3 years of practice tutorial
  • Exit plan for final year of courses, practica, and dissertation
  • Approved dissertation draft by 9/15/09
  • Faculty support by vote of eligibility and readiness on 9/16/09

Eligibility to start internship

  • Good academic standing
  • Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above
  • Completion of all required coursework and practica
  • Documentation of at least 2000 hours of practica
  • Completion of all required remediation
  • No temporary grades M, N, X, I
  • Completed Dissertation to OAA by 7/15/09

Internship Application Timeline

Spring/Early Summer
  • Pass CCE by Spring
  • Work on PROFESSIONAL DISSERTATION draft
  • Review SOPP internship eligibility requirements in Internship Handbook
  • Download the APPIC application form (www.appic.org) - An updated version will be posted on the web site 7/9/09. It will give an idea of the information sites are requesting.
  • Talk to training peers and SOPP outgoing interns and those who are completing their internship experience. Talk to interns and supervisors if you are at a site that has an internship program.
  • Update your vitae
  • Think about goals for internship training, your clinical strengths and areas in need of development
  • Draft responses to questions from the APPIC application
  • Complete hours of clinical experience from APPIC application
  • Decide who you’ll want to write your letters of recommendation and request them early. Choose someone who can comment favorably on you and your clinical experience. Typically three letters are requested. Be prepared to send letters from two supervisors and one faculty member. Some sites have other requirements for letters as indicted in their application packages.
  • Review the APPIC Directory online and internship web sites. Consider possibilities for your applications.
  • Check the APPIC web site regularly. Subscribe to available match service news sites.
  • SOPP Internship Handbook updated on line following the publication of the AAPI

Mid/Late Summer

  • Complete professional dissertation draft
  • Generate a list of possible sites. Check history table of SOPP acceptances and interviews. Consider the fit between the site and your training needs and background. Include geographic diversity
  • Have an appropriate person proof and help you edit essays
  • Request applications from sites
  • Set up a budget for application fees, mailing costs, travel expenses, phone calls, etc.
  • Set up a tracking process for application materials
  • Verify accuracy of courses and grades on transcript
  • Schedule meeting with Associate Dean for CT regarding internship readiness and eligibility, vitae, search focus, letters of recommendation.
  • Order a supply of transcripts once summer quarter grades have been posted.

September

  • Deadline for all application eligibility requirements is generally September 15
  • SOPP Faculty conduct Internship Readiness Review Meeting. Official eligibility letters go out after this meeting.
  • Narrow list of sites you intend to apply to. Fifteen – 20 sites (MAX) where you would be a good fit is recommended. Check history table of sites interviewing and accepting SOPP students
  • Get preliminary feedback on site list from Associate Dean for CT
  • Provide anticipated deadlines to individuals writing letters of recommendation
    Order additional transcripts as needed
  • Register with National Matching Service Inc. (www.natmatch.com/psychint/) as soon as you are approved to apply. Do not get caught in the rush in December.

October

  • Have final list of sites approved by the Associate Dean for CT. The number of SOPP applications to any one site may be restricted.
  • Be sure to follow the sites’ directions for forwarding letters of recommendation.
  • Complete and mail applications with early deadlines. Keep a copy of everything you send out. It is recommended that you send everything via receipted mail so you can track delivery.

November

  • Complete remaining applications
  • Participate in internship mock interviews in PT
  • Follow-up with sites to ensure that applications have been received and are complete
  • Buy interview clothes if you do not have them

December

  • Be prepared. You will get some rejection letters
  • Practice interviewing skills with a peer or mentor
  • Compile a list of potential questions for sites where you remain under consideration
  • Sites will be contacting you to schedule interviews. Make travel arrangements
  • Review site materials and your interview questions prior to any interviews
  • Meet with Associate Dean for CT to consider additional sites with late application deadlines if needed.
  • Deadline to register with National Matching Service Inc.

January

  • Continue interviews. Notify any instructors if you need to miss classes for interviews.
  • Send thank you notes after each interview
  • Rank your sites as soon as all interviews are completed
  • Attend Internship Meeting-MATCH RANKING

February

  • Submit rank list to NMS due by 2/3/10.
  • Match/No Match notice given on 2/19/10.
  • Match Day—Go online to get matched site 2/22/10
  • Turn in Internship Application Data form to Office of Clinical Training

Curriculum Vitae Outline

These are typical sections and order. You may have additional sections (e.g., teaching, research team experience) to reflect your unique experiences. Use reverse chronological order, i.e., most recent first.

Identifying Information
  • Name. Do not include Bachelor's degree designations after your name. Do include graduate and professional degrees, e.g., MS, M.Ed., and JD.
  • Address
  • Telephone
  • E-mail, fax if personal number available
Education (if no degree, indicate dates of attendance)
  • Start with WSU, SOPP. You are now a Candidate for the PsyD degree in Clinical Psychology SOPP is an APA accredited program.
  • List other degrees/ schools in reverse order. Include all education since Bachelor's degree
  • Mention any honors associated with degree, e.g., graduated cum laude
  • You may list your dissertation with your SOPP education

Military Experience (active or retired, rank)

Licenses (for independent practice, e.g., LPC, LCSW, RN)

Practicum Training (Include Master's level clinical practica, but not Bachelor's work)

  • Clinical training associated with degree program. Briefly describe clinical work, populations seen, diagnoses, etc.
  • Label Master's vs. SOPP practica
  • Include dates of participationInclude name of supervisor and degree, total hours served. Any other hour information is included on application form
  • Do not include Practice Tutorial. This is a course.
Employment (paid work experience)
  • Clinical work
  • Other substantial work experience, especially if you are a change of career person
  • Generally cover graduate/professional work experience here, not e.g., high school or undergraduate work. SOPP students have substantial experience associated with this program.

Volunteer Clinical Experience

  • Unpaid clinically related work including WSU additional experience like PATH or MRP that was not practicum.

Teaching Experience

  • e.g., adjunct in the Department of Psychology
  • SOPP TA

Research Experience (as applicable)

School and Community Service

  • SOPP service, e.g., SGA, faculty-student committees
  • Community Service, e.g., Hospice of Dayton, Relay for Life cancer fundraiser
Publications/Presentations (can be separate sections if you have several in each category)
  • If a poster or paper carrying the same title was presented at more than one place, list the poster or paper once and beneath the tile, list where and when presented
  • Use APA format.
Professional Memberships (e.g., APA, OPA, ABCT, etc.)
  • Civic organizations like, NAACP or Lions Club belong in a separate section under School and Community Service
  • Indicate your status, e.g., student affiliate, associate member

Awards (not mentioned under Education, e.g., school fellowships, work commendations)
