APPIC Application for Psychology Internship (AAPI)

    1. Carefully review instructions before completing
    2. It is usually helpful to start with the practicum hours sections
    3. Some sites may have their own application and/or request other application materials
  2. See Fee Section for cost of submitting applications
  3. We recommend submitting twenty (20) applications

    1. Only hours served in PSI 997 and 908 (as directed) count in the practicum category.
    2. Other supervised experience goes in the other work section.
  2. Prepare drafts of all essay questions

  3. Include a cover letter with all applications
  4. Dr. Winfrey will complete Part 2 of the AAPI--Verification of Internship Eligibility and Readiness for each student.

Requesting Information
  1. Many sites now have their information available online for direct downloading. Directions for preferred methods of contact are indicated in the online APPIC Directory.
  2. Specify the academic year for which you are applying (2009-2010).
  3. Ask if they use their own application and/or forms in addition to the APPIC Application for Psychology Internship (AAPI).
  4. Be congenial, you're setting a precedence for future SOPP students as well as yourself.
  5. Limit your applications to no more than 20.
Letters of Recommendation
  1. Request MORE people to write letters than you need-psychologists who have directly supervised your clinical work and faculty who have instructed/advised you or supervised your dissertation.
  2. Request letters so they can be ready in time for your earliest deadlines.
  3. Share a copy of your vita and any other potentially helpful academic and training information with writers.
  4. Share the data table of your sites' contact and address information so letters can be personalized.
    1. Learn how to use mail merge for letters and labels.
Preparing Applications
  1. Read completely before beginning.
  2. Be sure to remove all names and other identifying information form all requested work samples. Work samples should be signed by your supervisor.
  3. Photocopy all applications before you fill them out.
  4. Enclose a return postcard with the application packet (with address on both sides).
  5. Allow enough time to personalize for each site.
