Violence Prevention Training Institue (VPTI)

Description A multi-phase national train-the-trainer program designed to promote the establishment of school-based child or adolescent violence prevention programs.
Purpose To prepare state or regional leaders to provide training and support to youth service providers in their home communities enagling them to carry out violence prevention programs in schools or other community settings.
Target Population Preference for participating of state education and health department personnel, ideally a team consisting either of the state adolescent health coordinator and the state drug-free schools coordinator, or staff from their departments who have roles in training and/or coordination of violence prevention programs. In some cases, other individuals identified by state coordinators who have potential for broad reach within the state or region may be selected. Note: VPTI trainees must be approved by the sponsors.
Training Focus The training program familiarizes participants with the methods and materials used in the PACT program, a violence prevention program which trains children and adolescents in prosocial and anger management skills and violence risk reduction education. Fellows are also trained in methods of training others to provide youth programs based on this model.
Training Method VPTI training has 4 phases:
  • Residency Training: A 5-day workshop held in Dayton which provides oriencation on the PACT violence prevention model, practice in faciliation of violence prevention groups, and observations and field experiences at Roth Middle School.
  • Pilot Projects: Violence prevention projects of at least 10 sessions facilitated by VPTI fellows to five them first-hand implementation experience.
  • Advanced Training: A 2 1/2 day program focused primarily on detailed planning for the dissemination workshops.
  • Dissemination Workshops: A minimum of three training sessions carried out by VPTI fellows for personnel from schools, health agencies, or other community organizations who are positioned to provide child or adolescent violence prevention services in schools in their home states.
