The Psy.D. Program

The Psy.D. degree is designed for individuals who want to be educated for the professional practice of psychology. It is the degree awarded by most doctoral programs nationwide that emphasize training for practice. Today, a large number of the professionals in the United States trained in clinical psychology are trained in programs that follow a practitioner training model. When SOPP was founded in the 1970s, the Psy.D. degree was still new. The degree is now well established and the Psy.D. degree is accepted by all state and federal regulatory bodies, and by virtually all employers. It is widely regarded as the appropriate degree for practitioner model doctoral programs.
