4.00 GRADUATE CREDIT
4.10 Course Numbering System
4.11 500-599: Courses that carry graduate credit only in a major
field different from that of the department offering the course.
Most such courses will be alternate designations of undergraduate
courses normally numbered 300-399.
4.12 600-699: Courses that carry graduate credit in any major fields that have
alternate designations of undergraduate courses normally numbered 400-499.
4.13 700-799: Courses intended for graduate students only.
4.14 800-999: Courses intended for post-master's or doctoral-level work.
4.20 Grading Standards
Students who wish to take "dual-listed" (e.g., PHY 420/620)
courses for graduate credit (PHY 620-level) are required to perform
additional work that reflects both quantitative and qualitative advances
over the undergraduate requirements (PHY 420-level), such as additional
scholarly readings, more rigorous research, and/or more comprehensive
examinations. The alternate work required for graduate credit will
be stated in the syllabi for all "dual listed" courses.
4.30 Credit Hour Limits
4.31 Graduate students can normally earn a maximum of sixteen hours
in a quarter. In a summer term of five weeks, the maximum number
of hours that can be earned is nine hours.
4.32 Students holding appointments as graduate assistants shall register for
a minimum of eight quarter hours of graduate work during each quarter the appointment
is held. Audited courses are not included.
4.33 Students wishing to deviate from the normal registrations listed above must
submit written requests to the Dean of the School of Graduate Studies for an
exemption. The request should have the support of the students' graduate program.
4.34 Graduate students with external full-time employment should normally register
for no more than two courses per quarter. Students and faculty advisors should
bear in mind the following in considering exceptions to this registration recommendation:
• The student's employment and its effect on available time and mental
alertness.
• The student's previous academic record.
• The nature of the course (s) taken and its (their) relationship to the
student's programs.
4.35 Students who have graduate scholarships are required to register for a minimum
of twelve graduate credit hours. Audited courses are not included.
4.40 Retroactive Graduate Credit
4.41 Under the rules of the Graduate Council, students must
be admitted to the School of Graduate Studies in order to earn and
receive regular graduate credit that may be applied toward degree
requirements.
4.42 Students earning workshop graduate credit while in Special Graduate Status
(not admitted into the School of Graduate Studies) who later are admitted into
a degree program may apply with program or advisor(s) approval only a limited
number of such credits (not to exceed twelve quarter hours) toward graduate degree
requirements.
4.43 Should Students in non-degree and teacher licensure statuses be accepted
into degree status at a later date, a maximum of one-half (50%) of the graduate
hours required for completion of degree requirements may consist of applicable
graduate courses completed in these statuses. For example, if a program of study
stipulates that fifty graduate hours are required for the award of a degree,
then up to twenty-five hours of graduate course work completed in a non-degree
status may be applied toward the requirements of that degree. Petitions requesting
a waiver to this policy will generally not be favorably considered and, in all
cases, will be reviewed by the Student Affairs Committee of the Graduate Council.
Colleges/programs may set lower non-degree credit hour limits for completion
of a degree program. While the non-degree hours that can be applied toward degree
requirements may be a mixture of courses completed in non-degree, teacher licensure,
and special graduate status, workshop credit is limited to a total of twelve
hours.
4.44 Graduate hours completed toward the requirements of an awarded master's
degree, as evidenced by the student's Program of Study, cannot be applied toward
the credit hour requirements of another graduate degree.
4.50 Graduate Credit for Undergraduates
4.51 Senior Permission
Students in their Senior year who are pursuing an undergraduate degree
at Wright State University may, under certain circumstances, take
graduate courses for graduate or undergraduate credit. Students must
complete the Senior Permission Form and
obtain all required signatures. Reapplication is required for any
subsequent period. In addition, students must indicate their desire
for undergraduate or graduate credit. No changes will be granted
to the type of credit selected after the course(s) have been completed.
Courses taken for undergraduate credit may be applied, with the academic
unit's approval, toward undergraduate degree requirements. Normally,
only twelve quarter hours of graduate course work taken for graduate
credit may be applied, with the graduate department's or program's
approval, toward graduate degree requirements after the students
have been admitted into a graduate degree program. Students admitted
to an approved transition program may be allowed to take and apply
more than twelve hours of graduate credit. Senior permission is given
for one quarter only. Students in an approved graduate transition
program are subject to credit hour restrictions approved for the
transition program.
A. To be eligible for senior permission, students must meet all of the following
qualifications*:
• 162 or more quarter hours earned toward the bachelor's degree.
• 3.0 cumulative grade point average on all undergraduate work completed
at Wright State University.
• Undergraduate advisor's approval.
• Permission of the chair of each department in which graduate credit is
desired.
* The above qualifications do not apply to students admitted into an approved
graduate
transition program. See “B” below.
B. Students admitted into an approved graduate transition program do not have
to formally
apply for Senior Permission. The Program Director of the transition program will
forward to the School of Graduate Studies Admissions Office the names of the
students that desire to take graduate credit. The School of Graduate Studies
will make the appropriate arrangements with the Registrar’s Office to allow
these students to register for graduate credit.
C. Students who have not yet earned the required 162 quarter hours of credit
may apply in advance to receive senior permission for the following quarter if
credits already earned plus the credits for which the students are currently
enrolled total at least 162 quarter hours and the grade point average, at the
time of application, meets the requirements given above.
D. If students have studies in progress at the time senior permission is requested
for the next term, any approval of the application is provisional and based upon
the meeting of all required standards at the end of the current term. Senior
permission will be revoked upon failure to meet these standards.
4.52 Non –degree undergraduate students are not permitted to register for
graduate courses.
4.60 Workshops and In-Service Courses
4.61 All students who have completed the graduate admission requirements
may take workshops and in-service courses.
4.62 In addition, students granted special status are permitted to take certain
workshop courses for graduate credit without being admitted to the School of
Graduate Studies (See Section 1.16).
4.70 Transfer Credit
4.71 Students may transfer courses (credits) completed at another
academic institution to their Wright State academic record and apply
those courses toward the requirements of graduate degree programs.
The courses must have prior approval and must have been completed
at a regionally accredited academic institution or at an academic
institution approved by the Policies Committee of the Graduate Council
in support of graduate programs that propose such transfer credit.
4.72 A student may transfer graduate credit if all of the following
conditions are met:
A. The student's advisor reviews the transfer of credit request and
recommends that the course(s) be accepted for transfer credit.
B. The student was admitted and enrolled as a graduate student at
the institution where the graduate credit was completed. In addition,
the student must be or have been in good standing at that institution.
C. The graduate credit to be transferred is within the seven year
time limit for completing a master's degree. Graduate Credit transferred
toward a program's elective credit requirement does not have to meet
the seven year time limit.
D. The amount of credit to be transferred does not exceed twelve
quarter hours. Except that a student who has, or is the spouse
or dependent child of an individual who has, moved to the Dayton
region within the past year to accept full-time, self-sustaining
employment and who had been an active degree candidate at an
institution near the previous location, may petition to transfer up
to one-half the total number of credits required for the Wright
State degree earned from the institution at which they were most
recently enrolled as a degree candidate. Such transfer credit
is subject to all other requirements of this policy.
E. The student has a Program of Study on file in the School of Graduate
Studies. The Program of Study must clearly reflect the student's
required courses (professional, core, advanced, introductory, general,
etc.) and elective courses. Transfer courses do not have to be placed
on the Program of Study until the courses have been approved by the
School of Graduate Studies. The grade for the credit is "B" or
better, or equivalent as determined by the School of Graduate Studies.
The School of Graduate Studies may require additional information
from the student and/or the institution in order to determine grade
equivalency.
F. An official transcript reflecting the credit to be transferred
is on file in the School of Graduate Studies.
G. The credit to be transferred has not been applied toward an awarded
degree.
H. The student is actively pursuing a graduate degree program at
Wright State and has currently completed at least three credit hours
of degree requirements.
I. The transfer of credit request is approved by the School of Graduate
Studies
4.73 In order to be awarded a master's degree, a student must complete at least
forty-five hours of graduate credit in a graduate program. At least thirty-three
of the forty-five hours must be completed at Wright State and be within the seven-year
time limit. All required (other than elective) program course requirements must
be completed within the seven-year time limit. The only exception to the
thirty-three hour minimum is that stated in 4.72 D.
4.74 A student wishing to transfer credit should consult with his or her program
advisor. If the advisor approves the courses for transfer credit and the courses
meet all of the School of Graduate Studies requirements, then the advisor should
request in writing that the School of Graduate Studies have the courses posted
on the student's academic record. The request should indicate the courses and
number of hours to be transferred (the hours to be transferred may be less but
cannot exceed the number of hours the student earned for the course(s)).
It the transfer credit request exceeds 12 hours per section 4.72 D,
the student should simultaneously submit an academic petition to the
School of Graduate Studies including documentation that (s)he meets
the employment condition expressed in 4.72 D.
4.75 Graduate courses completed at Wright State in non-degree status and later
applied toward degree requirements are not considered as transfer credit from
outside the University. Should students be accepted into degree status, a maximum
of one-half (50%) of the graduate hours required for completion of degree requirements
may consist of applicable graduate hours completed in non-degree status (see
sec. 4.43).
4.80 Credit By Examination
4.81 A graduate student may be awarded graduate credit by an academic
unit based on the successful completion of an examination prepared
by that academic unit. The development and offering of such an examination
is at the discretion of the individual academic unit. To apply for
credit by examination you must: be admitted to a graduate program
and registered at Wright State University; complete the appropriate
form (available from the Office of the Registrar); receive approval
from both the graduate program director and the department administering
the exam; schedule the examination with the participating academic
unit; pay a non refundable $25 fee at the Office of the Bursar; take
and pass the examination with at least a grade of “B”.
Signatures of the examiner and the department chair are required
to indicate successful completion of the examination. The completed
form is presented to the Office of the Bursar with payment of $25
per credit hour. You must return the form to the Office of the Registrar
for posting to the permanent record.
4.82 A maximum of twelve hours of graduate credit received through
credit by examination may be applied toward graduate degree requirements.
This credit may be elective and/or program required credit. Colleges
may specify which courses may be completed through credit by examination.
4.83 A particular course requirement may be waived through the successful
completion of a proficiency examination. To apply for a proficiency
examination, you must: complete the appropriate form (available at
the Office of the Registrar); schedule the examination with the participating
academic unit; pay the nonrefundable $25 fee at the Office of the
Bursar; and take and pass the examination. |
