Wireless Networking Guidelines

Computing and Telecommunications Services (CaTS) recognizes the growing popularity of wireless networking. Wireless connectivity utilizes airspace as a network media. CaTS is responsible for ensuring the network performance, integrity, and security of wireless airspace.

Implementation:
In order to provide the university wireless infrastructure with maximum benefit and minimal interference, CaTS provides specific requirements for its implementation. The wireless 802.11b ethernet standard CaTS implements is restricted to a limited number of channels in the 2.4 GHz range.

CaTS must approve any purchase of wireless access points. Once approved, the client must contact CaTS concerning the installation of the access point. CaTS will perform ongoing management of all access points; any other wireless devices found on the campus network will be disconnected.

Clients must be aware of the possible interference from other wireless services that also use this range. Devices may include 2.4 GHz cordless phones, audio speakers, microwaves, and other network devices. Any of these devices which are installed on the campus and interfere with the campus wireless network must be removed.

Security:
Normal means of physically securing a wired network are not practical with wireless technology due to its nature. A wired network is point-to-point and the wiring is controlled; radio signals move freely between barriers such as floors and walls. Measures must be taken to limit the event of a network compromise or interference.

Where feasible, access points connected to the campus network will be placed on a secure VLAN and routed through the campus firewall. This provides security and logging. As in a lab environment, all clients using the wireless network must authenticate before access to the network resource is allowed. In other areas, the client must register their Mac with CaTS. If the Mac is not registered, network access is not allowed.

Supported Devices:
CaTS Network Services has identified the Cisco Aironet 1200 for use at Wright State University.
