Cool Stuff to Do
Swap Meet
There will be a Swap Meet for the students to exchange trinkets
at the Nutter Center from 4 to 6 p.m. Generally, teams collect donated
items from businesses around their area that might be of interest to
swap or get things from the dollar store that might be fun to swap.
Things we see at Nationals include pencils, pens, key chains, bouncy
balls, hats, t-shirts, etc. There is no money involved, just swapping.
On some teams the kids have all the same items in their bags to swap; on other teams, the kids empty out their "junk drawers" and have different things in each student's bags to swap. The possibilities are endless.
U.S. Army STEM Experience
The Wright State University Army ROTC program invites you to take part in the U.S. Army STEM Experience during the 2012 Science Olympiad Invitational.
The STEM vehicle will be located at the main quad from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will move to the Wright State Nutter Center from 4 to 6 p.m. prior to the Awards Ceremony.
OBJECTIVE
The Experience will increase public awareness regarding U.S. Army opportunities in the fields of leadership and education and showcase science, technology, engineering, and mathematics-related training and careers available to soldiers.
SCENARIO
Students will enter the STEM Experience Vehicle in groups of four. Students are transported to the year 2032 via a stream of fictional video clips detailing an extremist group that has attacked a chemical plant in eastern Europe. A team of U.S. Army soldiers and scientists briefs students regarding the current situation and informs them that their skills are needed to protect the lives of thousands of endangered civilians. Students use touch screen computer stations to build and launch science and technology-based solutions to avert environmental crisis.
