From the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs
Spring 1996 Vol. 27, No. 3
We have a Director! On May 6, RSP welcomed Dr. William Sellers, freshly
arrived from California. Bill comes to us from the Office of the
President, University of California, where he served as principal
administrative analyst. He was responsible for interpreting and
administering research policies for the University of California
system. Bill lived in Berkeley and worked in Oakland.
Before going to California in the mid-1980's, Bill was an Assistant
Director in the Office of Sponsored Programs at the University of
Chicago where he also worked as an administrator in the Department of
Economics and earned the Ph.D. in Philosophy. Bill has had an eclectic
career, as owner of a family bakery/bookstore in Maine, developer and
manager of Small Creek Vineyards in Napa, California, and president of
Smart Books, Inc., a publisher of multimedia college textbooks. Along
with this refreshing variety of occupations, Bill has managed to become
a nationally recognized expert in research administration policy.
If you have not introduced yourself to Bill, please drop by the RSP
office (122 Allyn) to welcome him to Wright State. My thanks to all of
you who helped bring our search process to a successful conclusion.
Jay Thomas
I have been on the job only a short time, but already I am very
impressed by the high level of professionalism and expertise of the RSP
staff. I am also thankful that Dr. Thomas is allowing me to settle in
gradually, giving me time to become familiar with relevant university
policies and customs.
Overall I intend to keep the focus of the office on faculty. RSP is and
will continue to be a comprehensive sponsored programs office,
providing a full range of services at all stages of the proposal/award
process.
There are also specific initiatives that I have been charged by Dr.
Thomas to undertake in my first year at WSU:
- work with faculty to seek out sources of funding;
- help revise university policies in the areas of patents, licensing,
and technology transfer;
- fine-tune the WSU conflict of interest policy and merge it with a
broader ethics policy being considered by the Board of Trustees; and
- help RSP become a leader in the development and implementation of
electronic research administration.
I will keep you posted on my progress in these areas in future issues of
Research News.
Please feel free to stop by the RSP office in 122 Allyn any time. We're
here to help.
Bill
