Larry Hussman, former professor and two time chair of the English department at Wright State, has accepted an invitation to read from his recently published sixth book, Acanemia: A Memoir of life in the Halls of the Higher Learning.
The reading is scheduled for June 24 at the Blue Jacket bookstore, 30 South Detroit Street in Xenia. It will be followed by a question and answer session.
Acanemia is described as an irreverent appraisal of America’s higher education players—governors, regents, trustees, administrators, faculty, and students. Like all good memoir writers, Hussman reveals dark and painful moments in his private life.
Hussman, a native of Dayton and a product of Catholic education, including the University of Dayton, asserts that he never became a serious learner until becoming a graduate student at the University of Michigan.
An acerbic critic of several Wright State presidents, Hussman says that the best campus leaders come from within universities, as opposed to outsiders hired by national search committees. He denounces the incursion of business and corporations into America’s higher educational affairs, including Wright State’s.
Virtually all of Hussman’s academic career was spent at the University of Portland and at Wright State, but in retirement he found great satisfaction in teaching as a Fulbrighter and visiting professor in Poland and Portugal where students displayed a love for all things American, including our literature.
