Placement Testing General Information

NOTE: All students will be required to present a photo I.D. If you do not provide proof of identification, you will not be permitted to test.

During the registration period, the University College conducts placement testing in mathematics, reading, and writing for undergraduate students new to the university. If you are a new student, you must complete this testing before scheduling an academic advising appointment to prepare for course registration.

Mathematics

All students preparing to enroll for their first mathematics course must take a mathematics placement examination. Your course enrollment is based on your score on this test. DEV 083 and DEV 093 offer you the opportunity to remove any skill deficiencies.

If you are a transfer student who has earned college credit in mathematics with a grade of C or above, you need not take this exam. Also, if you transferred from Clark State, Edison State, or Sinclair Community College and have completed all your required developmental mathematics courses within the past year, you need not take this exam.

Writing

Students enter Wright State with very different abilities in English. To give each student the best writing instruction, several courses have been developed, ranging from honors sections of freshman English 101 to DEV 072, 082 and 092, which are noncredit courses for students who need more instruction than the two-quarter ENG 101-102 sequence provides. Placement testing exists to place you in the course most appropriate for your writing abilities when you enter Wright State. You will participate in a Guided Self Placement exercise to assist you in determining the appropriate starting point for your specific writing needs. You may be asked to write an essay within a time limit too. Other test scores and your high school grades will be used to determine your placement into English courses.

You do not need to make an appointment to take the placement exams if you are a transfer or non-traditional student. Incoming Freshmen will register for Placement Testing when they register for a "SOAR" session. You should plan to review math at www.act.org/compass/sample/index.html before testing. You should plan to take the assessment tests at least two weeks before scheduling academic advising.

Individual testing times may be available. For more information contact the University College, 180 University Hall, at (937) 775-5750. Office hours are Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 5 p.m.
