Shepard, whose son Matthew was murdered in 1998 in a crime motivated by hatred of gays, urges an end to anti-gay violence and promotes a greater understanding of gay issues. She will speak in conjunction with Wright State's Presidential Lecture Series and Rainbow Alliance. This lecture is free and does NOT require registration.

For more than 25 years, Cruz has advanced service
learning nationally and internationally. As executive
director of the Higher Education Consortium for
Urban Affairs, Cruz led 18 colleges and universities
to develop community-based learning programs. She
won the 2005 National Youth Leadership Council’s
Alec Dickson Servant Leader Award, which honors
exemplary leaders who have inspired the service learning
field. Now an independent consultant,
Cruz works with colleges and universities, national and state Campus
Compacts, and the California State University system on service learning
and civic education.
