Quest Across Campus

Introduction

The events below are part of Quest Across Campus, a weeklong set of events and presentations culminating with Quest for Community: A Call for Action, the all-day diversity conference on Friday, April 13, 2007. The theme of Quest Across Campus and this year’s Quest conference is “The Strength of Difference: Transforming Communities for the Future.” We hope you act on the information you learn during these activities and that you participate in the other events held this week and attend Quest on April 13.

Activities

The posters will be presented by the students participating in the Ohio Science and Engineering Alliance (OSEA), Glenn Stokes Research Program. OSEA is an alliance program funded by the National Science Foundation under The Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation Program. Undergraduate research students are supported by the program to work with a faculty mentor on a summer or year-round research project. The 2006 Glenn Stokes Research Program conference was at Ohio State University; the 2007 conference will hosted by WSU on August 9 and 10, 2007.

These six poster boards display some commonly held stereotypes about groups of different racial, gender, and sexual orientation backgrounds. Students, staff, and faculty will be available to provide accurate information to counter these stereotypes. This event display will compliment the "Dissed in the Classroom" discussion on April 11.

There are many interesting stories of how students, faculty, and staff have created or experienced a sense of community at WSU. We are interested in hearing yours. Between Monday, April 9, and Thursday, April 12 (9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.), come to the Wright State University Multicultural Centers (154 Millett Hall) to record your experience as part of a community at Wright State. During this week, all faculty, staff, and students are invited to visit the Multicultural Centers, have their picture taken, and create an audio recording responding to one or more of the following questions:

1. Tell us about the sense of community you experience at Wright State. Where do you feel it?
2. Describe how Wright State University could strengthen a sense of community on campus.
3. What role could you play in strengthening a sense of community at Wright State University?

During Quest for Community on April 13, your thoughts will be heard across campus as we gather together to explore ongoing efforts to create inclusive environments, programs, and curricula.

See our video loop of members of the WSU Community responding to questions regarding diversity, what diversity looks like at WSU, and hopes for the future. Community members include students from the Mini University (preschool and kindergarten) and students, faculty, and staff responses. Individuals who stop by are invited to watch the video and then write their feelings, thoughts, and hopes for the future regarding diversity on our "Wall of Transformation." Our Quest Across Campus Activity will be staffed by members of the Student Affairs Diversity Team from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

This forum will address the Issues of Diversity in the College of Education and in teaching.

Visit this collage display of photos illustrating how the University College staff reflects a microcosm of the diversity of the larger WSU community. The collage display will consist of photos of each University College staff member. Each photo will have an interesting factoid about the staff member and will illustrate the diversity and shared commitments of the University College staff.

University Advancement takes the university's commitment to diversity very seriously, both as a division and as a collection of dedicated individuals. This year, we will spotlight two of University Advancement's many efforts to reach out to make the university more welcoming and accessible to diverse populations. In one display, we will illustrate how our efforts to market the university reflect diversity and strive to show Wright State as an environment that welcomes all people. In another display, we will show some of the opportunities available to faculty, staff, alumni, and retirees who wish to donate to scholarships that support students from underrepresented populations.

This College of Liberal Arts Faculty Lecture series combines student performance, audience participation, and dialogue about actual experiences when students have felt isolated because of their diversity. View and print this event's flyer (PDF).

"Mars and Venus, or Planet Earth: Women and Men on Campus in the New Millennium" Dr. Michael Kimmel, Professor of Sociology, State University of New York, Stony Brook

An exciting travel experience around the WSU campus with students (travelers) on a quest to locate and identify key sites that reflect the amazing diversity of our WSU community and environment. Students will "travel" individually or as a "tour" group beginning in the Student Union to register and receive their passport/map of travel locations. Travel locations will include colleges/units who have designated activities for the Quest Across Campus, as well as areas of interest on campus (sculptures, memorial plaques, named buildings, etc.) that reflect diversity. Prizes will be awarded to individuals who complete the travel experience. Also, every tourist will receive a T-shirt (provided after the activity).

Come join us in celebrations of 40th anniversary of Wright State and 10th anniversary of UCIE in the biggest multicultural event on campus—the IFA. Scintillating performances, delicious ethnic food, colorful flag parade, and cultural table displays will all depict the theme of the year: "Celebrations Around the World."
