College or School:
A major in English helps students develop the essential skills in reading, analyzing, researching, writing, and speaking for success in nearly all occupations and professions. Students may major in one of five English concentrations: Creative Writing, Integrated Language Arts, Literature, Professional Writing, TESOL.
The general concentration allows students to shape their own program within a traditional framework of courses in literary history, theory, and analysis. The creative writing concentration offers a full series of introductory and advanced courses in creative writing. The professional writing concentration includes courses in business writing, technical writing, and journalism. A combination of linguistics and current methods of language instruction creates the foundation of the TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) concentration.
Integrated Language Arts is an education-based licensure program at Wright State University that prepares you for a career in teaching ILA (English, Communication, Journalism, and Theatre) in grades 7-12 in the state of Ohio, also known as Adolescent/Young Adult Licensure (AYA). This program requires that you complete your undergraduate program with a B.A. in English: Language Arts Education, and upon completing your Fifth Year, receive licensure and a Master's in Education.
- Certificate programs in Technical Writing, TESOL, and Professional Writing are available.
- Students interested in teaching English at the high school level should pursue the Integrated Language Arts curriculum. Students will be required to complete the graduate-level program through the College of Education and Human Services to qualify for Ohio licensure.
