Learn about the Math Testing Policy.
Wright State uses the ACT assessment product "eCOMPASS" to determine the starting point for your Math courses at WSU. The math placement test measures your ability in mathematics. The results identify the appropriate starting point for you to help you excel in math. Your math placement test must be completed in person at a proctered location at least 14 days before your scheduled Orientation date.
Pre-registration is required.
Any student who has taken a college-level mathematics or statistics course that is equivalent to a WSU mathematics or statistics course and passed it with a "D" grade or higher is not required to take the math placement test. If your previous math or statistics course is not equivalent to one offered at Wright State, you will need to take the math placement test. If you are currently taking an AP course in high school, you will still need to take this placement test.
Students with ACT Math scores of at least 27 (SAT Math 620) are not required to take the math placement test and may register for Level 3-5 courses, provided they do not have a high school math deficiency. However, students need to check with their advisor to identify the appropriate Math course(s) for their major.
Students with ACT Math scores of at least 27 (SAT Math 620) intending to major in fields requiring Calculus may register for MTH 2300 provided they received A’s or B’s in all semesters of high school Advanced Algebra, Pre-calculus, and/or Trigonometry. Students meeting these criteria must register for MTH 2300 no more than 1 year after graduation from high school.
NOTE: The ACT/SAT placement test exemption policy applies to a student’s most recent (not the highest) score on the ACT/SAT. This applies to scores less than 2 years old.
Mathematics placement levels are valid for one calendar year. If a student does not begin taking mathematics or statistics classes during his/her first year at Wright State University, he/she should retake the Mathematics Placement Test to determine where to begin.

You may be contacted after receipt of your online registration profile to verify your request.
Once your math authorization has been set up, watch your Wright State e-mail for a message from "HVSerivces@act.org" for instruction on what to do to finalize your math placement test session at the testing site. Please print and take the confirmation email with you to the testing session. It has your WSU test authorization number on it. NOTE: It may take several days for you to receive this e-mail. When you register for your placement test, you will see several examples of questions that are similar to those on the test.
Please note that the test does not include calculus. You can place in calculus by doing well in the college algebra and trigonometry sections. The test will start in Algebra II. You need to know this material extremely well to be able to see advanced algebra and trigonometry questions.
It is your responsibility to read all test policies and review testing material prior to taking the test.
Arrive 30 minutes before your test time. You should bring your printed test confirmation e-mail, photo ID, university ID number (U########), and two pencils. Calculators are not permitted- you will have access to a Microsoft built-in calculator.
Students who arrive 30 min. after the test start time will not be admitted. Children are not allowed in the testing room. Please make other arrangements for your children before arriving to take the placement test.
Testing is located in 042 Dunbar Library.
Completion time varies as the test is not timed. It typically takes 30 - 50 minutes to complete. In some rare cases, it could take longer.
We recommend you review before testing because Wright State has restrictions on the circumstances under which a student can retest in math within a year.
A student may retake the test no more than 4 times per year as long as the student has not completed a mathematics, statistics or developmental math course. A student may not retest if he/she has stayed in mathematics, statistics or developmental math course past the drop date/refund date and received a grade. Retesting is to be done no more than once a term. The first retest is free. Additional retest(s) will require a $20 fee.
Math placement scores expire after 1 year. A student is required to retest if he/she has not taken and passed a mathematics/statistics course within one year of taking the placement test.
