Freshmen Outdoor Orientation Trip: Aug. 27–Sept. 3, 2008
Experience the outdoors and meet some of your fellow classmates!
The Freshmen Outdoor Orientation Trip (FOOT) is an optional, unique backpacking experience in the wilderness that takes place the week before classes start.
In groups of 8-10 incoming freshmen, your group leaders will guide you along the Appalachian Trail, crisscrossing the border of Tennessee and North Carolina.
No. You will still need to attend a scheduled Orientation date.
What will I do?
You will hike, camp, cook outdoors, play games, swim in waterfalls, and spend a day giving back to the mountains by learning how to build and maintain hiking trails. See the schedule below.
Do I need to be an experienced hiker to sign up for FOOT?
No. These trips are suited for all levels of experience—from novice to Eagle Scout.
Who are the trip leaders?
Your group leaders (two per group) are certified in Wilderness First Aid, CPR, and Leave No Trace backcountry techniques. They are upperclassmen who have gone through a rigorous selection and training process to be able to share their love of the outdoors with you.
Are there physical requirements?
Yes. You must be able to carry your own backpack, weighing up to 40 pounds, on a mountain-hiking trail.
How much does it cost?
There is a $200 fee that includes meals (except during travel), FOOT transportation, equipment, sleeping accommodations, and all fees involved with FOOT activities.
