Housing tips
We know this is an exciting time for you. Here are some things to remember as you begin planning and packing.
What to bring
Trying to figure out what to bring? Check out our list of some common things you may want to add to your list. Talk with your roommates about who's bringing stereo equipment, TV, cooking utensils, and similar items.
Be space conscious
Although our rooms are among the more spacious in the region, you'll want to be cautious about how many personal belongings you bring. You will have a wardrobe and a small three-drawer chest of drawers for your clothes.
Bathroom facilities
First-year students will be in double rooms in Hamilton Hall and the Honors Community, or double, triple, and quad rooms in The Woods. The Woods rooms have an attached bathroom (with shower and toilet) and a sink in the main living area. Hamilton Hall rooms have community bathrooms. The Honors Community provides one bathroom for every two double rooms.
Carpet
All rooms in the Woods, Honors and Hamilton are now wall-to-wall carpeted.
Computers and internet access
Each resident is provided a computer connection, so you can access the campus network and the internet. All residence halls also have wireless internet access available to students. For more information on these and other computing services offered to students, check out the CaTS Student Zone website.
Furnishings
Each resident may request the type of furniture configuration desired for the bed he/she will be using. We recommend that you don't bring additional furniture items until after you see what is provided and how it fits into your room.
The Woods beds can be set up three ways:
- Low beds (minimum clearance under the bed) with free-standing wardrobe, desk, and three-drawer chest which will fit beside or under the bed
- High beds (approximately 27 ½ inches above floor), which provides more under-bed storage space for boxes, containers, etc., with free-standing wardrobe, desk, and three-drawer chest which will fit beside or under the bed
- Bunk beds with wardrobes and desks free-standing
- Loft beds with wardrobes and desks underneath the elevated beds
In Hamilton Hall and the Honors Community, you can have the beds high or low.
Linens
Don't forget that you'll need extra-long sheets for the beds in the residence halls. You can find extra-long sheets at many department stores.
Microwave and refrigerator
All of our residence rooms are equipped with microwave and refrigerator—less for you to worry about!
Telephones
Each room has one telephone connection. Even though most students rely on their cell phones, we strongly encourage each room to have a landline phone that can be used in the event of emergencies. You will need to bring your own telephone—check with your roommate(s), so you don't end up with multiple phones. Each student will have a telephone account that includes voicemail and the ability to place long-distance calls using personal identification number (PIN).
Smoke-free communities
All campus housing is smoke-free. Smoking will not be permitted in any campus residence hall or campus apartment.
Rooms in Hamilton Hall and The Woods have room air conditioners, which will work when the outside temperature is above 70 degrees. Heat is provided by hot-water baseboard heaters controlled by an in-room thermostat. The Honors Community rooms are also air conditioned.
