Academic Options—Writing and Study Skills
Introduction to College Writing
Give yourself a head start in your writing courses and Wright State career. Our Introduction to College Writing introduces you to the activities and expectations of ENG 1100, the first required Wright State Core writing course. This workshop is open to all incoming, first-year, Wright State students.
The workshop will help you prepare for other classes as well. Research shows that students who attend the workshop not only earn better grades in ENG 1100 than students who do not; they earn better OVERALL grades. Students have praised previous workshops:
- “We got individual attention and I really learned something.”
- “I really think this will help as I start school Monday.”
- “I would recommend this to any freshman taking ENG 1100.”
Wright State Writing Academy
July 29–August 22
Writing and reading in college present greater challenges than in high school. If you place into Developmental Writing, the Wright State Writing Academy offers you an introduction to the expectations for college-level work in writing and reading. In addition, you will practice the techniques, behaviors, and attitudes of successful college students; the goal of the Academy is to prepare you for success at Wright State.
Freshman Outdoor Orientation Trip (FOOT)
Appalachian Trail Backpacking Trip
Experience the outdoors and meet some of your fellow classmates! The Freshman Outdoor Orientation Trip (FOOT) is an optional, unique backpacking experience in the wilderness that takes place the week before classes start.
In groups of 8 to 10 freshmen with two trip leaders, you will hike, camp, cook outdoors, play games, swim in waterfalls, and spend a day giving back to the mountains by learning how to build and maintain hiking trails.
This week of outdoor adventure with a group of new classmates will be an incredible introduction to the Wright State community; it will get you started on the Wright FOOT.
