Math Options
Wright State offers several summer review programs whose objectives are to increase your placement level. These are short-term, intensive programs designed to brush up skills that may have become rusty. There are two mathematics review programs.
For student interested in majoring in liberal arts and education:
Review of Algebra in Preparation for MTH 145
The Department of Mathematics and Statistics is offering a summer workshop for incoming freshman intending to major in liberal arts and education who will be taking MTH 145: Mathematics and the Modern World as their General Education Area I math requirement. To be eligible for this workshop, a student must have a math placement score of 2 and an ACT Mathematics score of at least 18 (or SAT Mathematics score of at least 450). After an intensive review of algebra, these students will be ready for MTH 145. The department will waive the prerequisite to MTH 145 for students who complete this workshop as long as they register for MTH 145 in Fall Quarter 2011.
The workshop will meet for four hours daily, Monday, August 22 through Thursday, August 25, and Monday, August 29 through Thursday, September 1. The morning session will run from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., and will consist of lectures and group work. The afternoon session will be held in a computer lab from noon to 2 p.m., and will use an online educational system called ALEKS to enhance student learning of the concepts developed in the morning sessions.
The cost of this workshop is $120. Enrollment will be limited to 50 students. Visit www.math.wright.edu/summer.html for more information and and enrollment form.
Students completing the workshop will be asked to register for one of the following MTH 145 sections in the fall: MTH 145-01, MTH 145-02, or MTH 145-06.
For students interested in majoring in engineering and science:
Academic Advantage Program
The program will be offered August 21–26 and will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily.
The College of Engineering and Computer Science is offering the Academic Advantage Program for students entering engineering or computer science programs who need to review and refresh their mathematics skills. Students may enter with any mathematics placement score. Students retake the mathematics placement exam after the course. Last year over 70% of the students tested up at least one level.
The cost of the Academic Advantage Program is $175.
Visit the Academic Advantage Program website for more information and to register.
Writing and Study Skills Options
Wright State Academy
August 1–September 1, 2011
The Wright State Academy is a five-week intensive program designed to introduce students who place into Developmental Writing courses to the expectations for college-level work in writing and reading comprehension. In addition, students in the academy will become familiar with the behaviors and attitudes of successful college students.
The Academy runs Mondays through Thursdays, August 1–September 1, 2011. Morning and evening sessions are scheduled to accommodate students’ work obligations. The morning session goes from 8:30 to 11:30 and the evening session from 5:30 to 8:30. The cost to enroll is $120, plus textbooks and materials. Enrollment information and the application form are available at Orientation, in University College (180 University Hall), and in the English Department (470 Millett Hall).
Instructors of students who complete the Academy will re-evaluate their writing course placement, making them potentially eligible to enroll in ENG 101, rather than their current DEV writing course.
Residency: For each of these summer programs, on-campus housing and food service are available at extra cost. The fee for housing is $100 per week and daytime meals are available at the University’s Union Market.
Financial Aid: The fees may be included in the student’s 2011-2012 financial aid.
Introduction to College Writing
August 29–September 1, 2011
This optional four-day workshop will introduce students to the activities and expectations of the required General Education writing courses at Wright State.
Studies show that students who attend the workshop not only earn better grades in English 101 than students who do not; they get better OVERALL grades.
Visit the Introduction to College Writing website for more information.
