Community Mercy Health Partners executive joins Advisory Council; Springfield Regional Medical Center posters lauded
Terry Boys, Vice President, Patient Care Services, Chief Nursing Officer for Community Mercy Health Partners, is a recent addition to the Advisory Council of the Nursing Institute of West Central Ohio. And Ms. Boys, RN, MSN, joins the Council in the wake of positive news from Springfield Regional Medical Center, which is part of the Community Mercy Health Partners family. Click here for details.

Ohio State University and Ohio University officials tour the Living Laboratory
Experts in ergonomics and engineering from Ohio State University and Ohio University were impressed with the range of technologies in use at the Living Laboratory of the Nursing Institute of West Central Ohio during a March 15, 2011, tour of the facility. “They said they were blown away,” said Diane Mehling, assistant director of the Nursing Institute. W. Gary Allread, Ph.D., CPE, is Program Director for the Institute for Ergonomics at Ohio State University. Diana J. Schwerha, Ph.D., is an assistant professor in Industrial and Systems Engineering at Ohio University. The pair along with Cleveland engineer Howie Vactor toured the Nursing Institute’s research and education facility to explore opportunities for future collaboration, Mehling said. The meeting was arranged by Jennie Gallimore, Ph.D., Director of the Ohio Center of Excellence in Human-Centered Innovation at Wright State University. Mehling said the Nursing Institute will maintain contacts with the visitors as they develop ideas for possible joint projects and grant applications.

Nursing Institute/Wright State innovator awarded research grant
The Nursing Institute of West Central Ohio will receive a $15,000 grant from the AMDA Foundation/Pfizer Quality Improvement Selection Committee to help support the innovative Alzheimer’s research being done by Dr. Govind Bharwani. Dr. Bharwani is director of Nursing Ergonomics and Alzheimer Care at the Nursing Institute of West Central Ohio and co-director of ergonomics at a department in the College of Engineering, Wright State University. Debi Sampsel, executive director of the Nursing Institute of West Central Ohio, was featured in an article in the winter 2011 edition of the University of Toledo Alumni Magazine. Wright State professors pioneer use of the Living Laboratory
Detrice Barry, Ph.D., MSN, RN, and Sherrill Smith, Ph.D., RN, CNI, of the Wright State University – Miami Valley College of Nursing and Health were quick to recognize the potential of the Living Laboratory of the Nursing Institute of West Central Ohio. The professors began using the Laboratory to conduct research projects and educate nursing students within months of the facility's opening. “They were our pioneers,” said Debi Sampsel, executive director of the Nursing Institute. Presidential visit marks the end of the Living Laboratory's first year
Wright State University president Dr. Davids Hopkins and Graceworks Lutheran Services president Wills "Bill" Serr II toured the Living Laboratory and were shown the results of a major technology upgrade project there. Nursing Institute to study therapeutic use of PARO, a robotic baby seal
The PARO company of Japan developed an animated stuffed baby seal that reacts to its environment almost like a living pet. The company has entrusted the Nursing Institute with a PARO robot to test its suitability as a therapeutic tool for Alzheimer's patients and autistic youth. Article and photos.

Channels 22 and 45 feature story on Living Laboratory human patient simulators
Kathy Hart of the Dayton area ABC and Fox affiliated news programs produced a story about the Living Laboratory that aired on both Channel 22 and 45 in November. The story focused on a nursing training study being conducted by Detrice Barry and Sherill Smith of the Wright State University College of Nursing and Health. A second segment featuring the Living Laboratory's human patient simulators was aired during the local morning show the day after the newscasts.

Remote presence robot being tested at Sinclair Community College campus in Mason
Professors and administrators at Sinclair's downtown campus will be able to move around the college's Courseview Campus Center in Mason without ever leaving Dayton thanks to a robot on loan from the Nursing Institute of West Central Ohio. Robot users connect through a laptop computer and can drive the robot around classrooms and labs remotely. For details click here.

Home Technology Systems innovative "Digital Door Viewer" at Living Lab
Home Technology Systems of Dubuque, Iowa, has installed one of its Digital Door Viewers (DDV) at the Living Laboratory Smart Technology Home in Centerville. The device is an example of the consumer technology innovations that the Nursing Institute of West Central Ohio is testing in the homelike setting of the Living Laboratory, and the DDV has great potential as an aide to the elderly and disabled. The DDV basically takes the place of the peephole on an entry door, but instead of forcing the user to stand and squint through a tiny lens to see who's at the door, the DDV uses a camera to display the visitor on a small video screen. The device is expected to be beneficial for the elderly, for the sight-impaired and for persons who have trouble standing. Home Technology Systems has distributed a news article about its cooperation with the Nursing Institute.

Article from NIWCO staff to be featured in "Clinical Simulation in Nursing"
An article from the Nursing Institute of West Central Ohio sharing the results of some of its research into the use of remote presence robots will appear in an upcoming edition of the scientific journal "Clinical Simulation in Nursing." The journal, when published, will be available through Elsevier Inc. (www.elsevier.com/locate/ecsn). The article was written by Debi Sampsel, executive director of the Nursing Institute; Govind Bharwani, the Institute's director of nursing ergonomics; Diane Mehling, deputy director of the Institute; and Sherrill Smith of the Wright State University College of Nursing and Health. The research study indicated that 82 percent of faculty members and 87 percent of students accepted the idea of using robots in educational situations involving human patient simulators.

Living Laboratory video page added to Nursing Institute and Wright State websites
Working with local video specialists from MagicBox Productions, the Nursing Institute has produced a video featuring clients of the Instititute's Living Laboratory smart technology home on the campus of the Bethany Village senior living community in Centerville. The video is posted on Wright State's YouTube channel and is reachable from the Nursing Institute page "Our Expertise." The video can also be reached on the Wright State YouTube page.

Nursing Institute executive director named to board of Senior Independence
Debi Sampsel, executive director of the Nursing Institute of West Central Ohio, has been appointed to the new Board of Directors for Senior Independence, a company that offers home and community based services for older adults. Senior Independence was restructured from a division of Ohio Presbyterian Retirement Services, and the new company is a wholly owned subsidiary of OPRS. Senior Independence is Ohio’s largest not-for-profit provider of adult day care centers with 13 locations around the state serving 75,000 older adults.

Nursing Ergonomics and Alzheimer's Disease
Dr. Govind Bharwani, director of nursing ergonomics and Alzheimer's Disease outreach for the Nursing Institute, worked with his daughter, Meena Bharwani, in 2010 to develop the concept of "Behavior-Based Ergonomics" in the care and treatment of patients with Alzheimer's Disease.
