Ergonomics expert Bharwani in high demand
The Miami Valley Alzheimer Association is the latest group to seek a presentation from Govind Bharwani on his innovative approach for the care of Alzheimer's patients. Bharwani, (Ph.D., Engineering – Biomedical, Wright State University) is a Co-Director of Ergonomics and Continuing Education Programs in the Department of Biomedical, Industrial and Human Factors Engineering at Wright State University. Dr. Bharwani is the Nursing Institute's director of nursing ergonomics and is an expert in applying the principals of ergonomics to nursing. Recently he has won acclaim for potentially groundbreaking work in "Behavior-Based Ergonomics" in the care and treatment of patients with Alzheimer's Disease.
Working with his daughter, Meena Bharwani, Bharwani developed a system to customize a set of “interventions” to use with Alzheimer's patients as they become bored and disengaged. Click here for more detail. Dr. Bharwani has been invited to discuss his work in a number of venues.

Simulation National Leadership Conference
Patricia Burnell, Director of Simulation for the Nursing Institute of West Central Ohio, was a presenter at the Simulation National Leadership Conference held from Sept. 14 to 16, 2010, in New Orleans. The event was put on by the Department of Veterans Affairs. Burnell is a retired Air Force Nurse Corp veteran who has been involved with patient, family, and staff education, technological utilization, research, governmental, managerial, and leadership aspects of health care delivery throughout her career. Her participation in the SimLEARN portion of the program was featured on the Veteran Administration's Website. Click here for the story.
Midwest Regional HPSN:

The Nursing Institute co-hosted the Midwest Regional Human Patient Simulation Network Conference in Columbus, Ohio, on July 29, 2010.
The METI Learning session was held at the Center for Medical Education & Innovation at Riverside Methodist Hospital, and Debi Sampsel and Patricia Burnell of the Nursing Institute were among the featured presenters. Click here for more.

Remote Presence Clinical Innovation Forum:
Diane Mehling, assistant director of the Nursing Institute of West Central Ohio, met with leaders of the remote presence medical robot industry during the “Remote Presence Clinical Innovations Forum” in Santa Barbera, California, on July 23 and 24, 2010. Among those she encountered during the forum was Yulan Wang, PhD, (see photo) founder, chairman and CEO of Santa Barbera-based Intouch Health, creator of the two remote presence robots being used by the Nursing Institute in unique nursing-connected research, Mehling said. “Almost all of the applications that were described in the forum were about doctors working with the robots,” she said. “The Nursing Institute is one of the few places where the robots are being used in nursing.”Click here for more.
