Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing: An Introduction and Overview

This audio streamed lecture and handout present an overview and introduction to the field of psychiatric-mental health nursing. It includes history, definition of terms, theoretical frameworks. Mental health and mental illness are described as well the as roles of brain anatomy and neurophysiology in brain dysfunction. Effective communication techniques are discussed and how to differentiate between normal age related changes and mental disorders in older populations. This lecture can be used to prepare a pre-licensure nursing student for clinical practice, or as a supplement to classroom teaching.
