Shareable Learning Objects from the WSU College of Nursing and Health

The BEACON program at Wright State University College of Nursing and Health was designed as an accelerated post-baccalaureate entry into nursing program for individuals with a baccalaureate degree in a field other than nursing who are interested in becoming a professional nurse. BEACON is an acronym standing for Baccalaureate Education Accelerates Career Opportunities in Nursing. It is our premise that individuals who already have a baccalaureate education in a field other than nursing bring to the nursing profession a history of academic success and a broad understanding of world issues from their prior undergraduate study.

Funding for the planning of this program was supported by a grant from the 2003 Ohio Learning Network Emerging Needs Program. One of the outcomes of this funding was the development of sharable learning objects designed to facilitate the learning of students entering an accelerated nursing program. These sharable learning objects are in the form of text based documents and audio streamed lectures that are available on-line for students to review in addition to classroom presentations. Our belief is that adult learners have a variety of learning styles and the opportunity for on-line supplemental materials is useful for learners who prefer on-line delivery, who desire reinforcement of classroom presentations and who want supplemental access to content that can be made available on-line as well as on personal digital assistants as resource during clinical times.

Selected learning objects are being made available to faculty of other nursing students in Ohio who might benefit from added resources. The material in these sharable learning objects is based upon work supported by the Ohio Learning Network. Any opinion, findings, and conclusions or recommendations expressed in this material are those of the author(s) and do not necessarily reflect the views of the Ohio Learning Network. Due to the rapidly changing nature of health care information and the development of evidence based findings, it is up to the consumer of this information to verify the currency and accuracy of the information. In no way is the material offered in these sharable learning objects intended to replace a planned sequence of professional education. These sharable learning objects are not intended as approved continuing education for nurses. Wright State University College of Nursing and Health encourages anyone using these materials as part of their learning experience to do so only with the permission and support of qualified nurse educators.
