The Bridge Program

What is the Bridge Program?

MASTER OF SCIENCE DEGREE (MS) RNs WITH BA/BS IN FIELDS OTHER THAN NURSING

The Bridge Program "bridges" content from the basic nursing education - associate degree or diploma - such that a student can enter the master's program in nursing.

Who is eligible for the Bridge Program?

The Bridge Program is offered to students who have an associates degree or diploma in nursing, have an RN license, and have an earned baccalaureate degree in a non-nursing discipline. The baccalaureate degree must be from a regionally accredited university with a traditional liberal arts and sciences / general education base and a major in a specific academic discipline other than nursing, such as biology, education, or psychology. Baccalaureate degrees that do not meet admission requirements are those involving eclectic courses of studies, sometimes referred to as Bachelor of Elective Studies or other titles that do not denote a course of study in a specific discipline.

How are Bridge Students admitted?

Because they have a bachelor's degree, Bridge Program students are admitted through the School of Graduate Studies.

How is undergraduate content bridged?

Students without baccalaureate degrees in nursing are considered deficient in upper division nursing course work. The bridge portion of the program requires students to complete relevant nursing courses. Since the bridge content is at the undergraduate level, requirements are recommended by the Undergraduate Curriculum Committee and approved by faculty.

Are there other requirements for Bridge Program students?

Yes. Because Bridge Program students are working toward a master's degree, they need to meet the master's program requirement for a statistics course. If the student did not have an undergraduate statistics course in their baccalaureate program, they need to complete EDL 751, Educational Statistics and Research, or a similar course.

Who is the advisor for the Bridge Program students?

Graduate Concentration Coordinators will retain the roll of advisor for bridge students.

Can students take bridge courses and graduate courses at the same time?

Most students complete the bridge course work first, then take graduate courses. As students near the end of bridge courses, they may begin graduate courses. Bridge students are advised to take NUR 750, Health Policy, NUR 755, Informatics, NUR 708, Nursing Theory, and NUR 707, Nursing Research as beginning master's courses. Because informatics and health policy are not included in the bridge content, NUR 750 and NUR 755 should be among the first courses in the master's program work.
