Program Description

The Acute Care Nurse Practitioner program (ACNP) of study enables you to assume primary responsibility for direct care of patients with acute and chronic conditions in a variety of care settings. These settings may include emergency departments, intensive care units, acute care units, or specialty labs, clinics or physician practices. Students can select an area of emphasis such as critical care, cardiology, pulmonary, neurology, oncology, trauma, as well as additional specialty areas. Students interested in cardiology can apply for specialty cardiac tract within the ACNP program (Cardiology Specialty).

The program consists of advanced clinical practice and nursing science, built on a core of physiology, pathophysiology and pharmacology. Clinical preceptors in various clinical settings will help prepare you to:

  • Conduct comprehensive health assessments

  • Appraise health risks and behaviors

  • Order and interpret diagnostic tests

  • Diagnose and manage commonly occurring health problems and disease-related symptoms

  • Prescribe and evaluate drugs and other treatments

  • Coordinate care during transitions in settings

  • Provide guidance and counseling to restore, promote, and maintain health and quality of life

  • Work independently and collaboratively to enhance access to quality care for patients and families

  • Achieve a cost-effective, outcome-oriented practice

Graduates are eligible for certification through the American Nurses Credentialing Association as an ACNP.

Curriculum

The ACNP program consists of 59.5 credits, with 600 clinical hours. The program may be completed in five quarters or 16 months of intensive study, or within three years of part-time study. You will work with ACNP and physician preceptors in a variety of clinical settings.

 

Requirements

Applicants are considered on a competitive basis. Candidates are reviewed on their previous academic achievement, balanced academic background, employment experience, recommendations and written responses to essay questions on the application form. Final applicants are invited for a personal interview. Factors considered in both the essay and interview is your level of motivation, leadership potential, beliefs about advanced nursing practice, ability to express ideas and opinions, work experience, and experiences with people of different cultures. Furthermore, strong consideration is given to the degree of compatibility of your expressed career goals and the program goals.

 

 

Admission requirements for the ACNP program:

  • Bachelor's degree (BSN) in nursing from an accredited institution.

  • Licensed as a Registered Nurse in the state of Ohio.

  • Admission to Wright State University School of Graduate Studies. (Separate application submitted to the School of Graduate Studies with the appropriate fee.)

  • Admission to the College of Nursing and Health.

  • Cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale for your baccalaureate degree and any subsequent graduate work.

  • Three professional letters of recommendation: Recommendations may be relative to either academic studies or professional experience.

  • Completion of the professional statement. (See application form.)

  • Recommended: A minimum of three years recent critical care nursing experience.

  • Current ACLS certification (must be maintained throughout graduate studies)

Second Master's Option

Wright State University College of Nursing and Health offers a program that leads to a second master's degree with a concentration as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner. The purpose of the program is to meet the educational needs of master's prepared nurses who wish to pursue career opportunities as an ACNP, and to take the national certification examination as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner.
