Second Masters Option

Wright State University College of Nursing and Health offers a program leading to a second master's degree with a concentration as a Family Nurse Practitioner. The purpose of the program is to provide a convenient, cost effective opportunity for the master's prepared nurse to become a primary care provider and to be able to sit for the national certification exam as a Family Nurse Practitioner. Students in the second master's program will be required to attend classes on campus in a one-week session in the spring, fall, and winter, and one final session which will consist of a two-day seminar at graduation (spring quarter). Admission Criteria

Each applicant is reviewed by an admissions committee. Previous academic achievement, balanced academic background, employment experience, employer recommendation and written responses to essay questions on application are required of each applicant. A personal interview will be required for those applicants in the final selection pool after review of submitted documents is completed. Factors considered in the essays and interviews are leadership potential, motivation, ability to express ideas and opinions, conception of advanced nursing practice, diverse work and life experiences, and experiences with people of different cultures. Compatibility between expressed career goals and program goals is weighted heavily.

Admission requirements for the second master's Family Nurse Practitioner program include:

  1. Applicants must have a master's degree in nursing (MSN or MS) from an NLN accredited institution.

  2. Applicants must have or be eligible for licensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of Ohio.

  3. Applicants must be admitted to Wright State University School of Graduate Studies. (Separate application submitted to School of Graduate Studies and a $25.00 fee.)

  4. Applicants must have achieved a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale for their baccalaureate degree and graduate degree.

  5. Applicants must have completed an undergraduate physical assessment course or its equivalent.

  6. At least two letters of reference are required, one must be from a faculty or administrator in your Master's program and one from your current or most recent supervisor.

  7. Application Deadlines for the FNP Online program and the campus program are October 31st and March 31stThe FNP Online Program starts in Summer Quarter only. 

Persons accepted into the second master's Family Nurse Practitioner program are required to identify their own clinical sites for all clinical courses and the final practicum. Clinical sites and preceptors must be approved by faculty who will develop a letter of agreement with the preceptor prior to the start of the course. Clinicals may be completed at a convenient location for the student.

Applicants must apply to the School of Graduate Studies AND the College of Nursing and Health Family Nurse Practitioner program. The application to the Second Master's Family Nurse Practitioner program must include completion of the FNP Second Master's application form, a resume, essay and two letters of reference. (These materials must be returned to the College of Nursing. The application to the FNP program will not be considered until all materials have been received in the FNP office. The School of Graduate Studies will not forward your records to the College of Nursing and Health until transcripts for all college work, graduate and undergraduate, have been received.)
