Admission Criteria

All applicants are considered competitively. Each applicant is reviewed by an admission committee. Previous academic achievement, balanced academic background, employment experience, employer recommendation and the clinical essay are required of each applicant. All of the following required documents must be turned into the 160 University Hall before your application can be processed:

  1. the FNP application form,

  2. your resume,

  3. an essay about a meaningful clinical situation which helped you clarify your goals and desire to become an advanced practice nurse (maximum of 2 pages),

  4. two letters of recommendation from:

    1. your current or most recent supervisor and

    2. a faculty member of your BSN program or a previous employer

(Please address the letters to Donna Miles Curry, PhD, Director, FNP Program)

A personal interview will be required for those applicants in the final selection pool after review of submitted documents is completed. Leadership potential, motivation, ability to express ideas and opinions, conception of advanced nursing practice, diverse work and life experiences, and experiences with people of different cultures are factors considered in the essays and interviews. Compatibility between expressed career goals and program goals is weighted heavily.

Admission requirements:

  1. Applicants must have a bachelor's degree in nursing (BSN) from an NLN accredited institution.

  2. Applicants must have or be eligible for licensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of Ohio.

  3. Applicants must be admitted to Wright State University School of Graduate Studies. (Separate application submitted to School of Graduate Studies and a $25 fee.)

  4. Applicants must have achieved academically at a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale for their baccalaureate degree and any subsequent graduate work.

  5. One year full-time experience as an RN required.

  6. Applicants must have completed a basic physical assessment course or its equivalent within the last 10 years.

  7. At least two letters of recommendation are required: one letter from applicant's current employer (a previous employer if not currently employed), and one letter from a faculty member of the applicant's BSN program or a previous employer.

  8. Applicants must provide a brief narrative description of a meaningful clinical situation in which they were involved, and discuss how this situation helped clarify goals for professional development and the desire for a role as an advanced practice nurse. This should be a maximum of two typewritten pages.

  9. Finalist applicants will be required to interview with an admission selection committee.

  10. Application Deadlines for the FNP Online program and the campus program are October 31st and March 31stThe FNP Online Program starts in Summer Quarter only.

Students admitted to the class will include new full-time students, new part-time students and continuing (those who have already begun work in the master's program) part-time students. Click here for the School of Graduate Studies Home Page.

Due to the extensive clinical requirements, class size is limited. Requirements for the clinical courses will necessitate the commitment by students in either the full or part-time sequence of two full days per week for clinical learning experiences. Clinical placements will be in primary care sites. Hours at most sites are 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Clinical placements may require up to a one hour commute. Students who are continuing in the master's program must fit into the full-time schedule for the clinical courses for the first year. Students in either the full-time or part-time sequence who, for any reason, are not able to continue the sequence started will be withdrawn from the nurse practitioner track, but not from the graduate program. A withdrawal from the sequence will require reapplying to the FNP program.

Applications for the program must be completed and returned to the College of Nursing and Health for consideration for admission to the FNP program. If you meet all of the criteria, you will be contacted for personal interviews.
