The inspiration for the first Cameos of Caring gala came to Ellen Rudy, Dean of the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing, in 1998. Dr. Rudy decided “it was time to honor those unsung heroes on the front lines of health care.” This impression was further supported by her six-month sabbatical work as a bedside critical care nurse. In 1999, the first Cameos of Caring statues were presented to 20 dedicated nurses in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
The Spring 2000 issue of Pitt Nurse featured the story of the University of Pittsburgh’s salute to front-line nurses and the outpouring of support from hospitals, organizations, and individuals. As I read the article, I was certain our own Miami Valley health care agencies would participate in a gala to honor outstanding bedside nurses. We were proud to have 12 agencies participate in our first Cameos of Caring gala. In 2007, we had 19 agencies participating in this special program.
The outpouring of support for this event signifies a recognition of the contribution nurses make in a community committed to high-quality health care to its citizens.
I am also proud to announce that since we began our Cameos of Caring tradition in 2001, we have raised approximately $200,000 in scholarship funds for Wright State University nursing students. These funds represent our community’s commitment to providing quality health care by professional nurses to the Miami Valley.
