About the Center
Philosophy
The Center for Continuing Nursing and Health Education reflects the faculty belief that
continuing education is a lifelong, self-directed process of change including synthesizing
knowledge, skills, and values necessary for expanding the professional dimensions of the
individual. The acquisition of knowledge from the past and present is essential for
individual learners as well as for health care. Continuing education facilitates
development to improve health by enhancing practice, administration, research, and
education. The teaching-learning process is interactive, collegial, and
interdisciplinary.
The Center supports planned, organized learning experiences, which augment the knowledge,
skills, and attitudes of professionals working with issues related to health. These experiences
are based upon principles of adult learning, assumptions regarding factors that underlie
adult learning, and conditions that facilitate adult learning.
Goals
The Center for Continuing Nursing and Health Education has three goals. These goals are to
assist professionals in: the acquisition of knowledge from the past and present; the
exploration for new knowledge; and the advancement of lifelong learning.
Activities
The College of Nursing and Health, through the Center for Continuing Nursing and Health Education,
sponsors courses and workshops throughout the year. Some of these courses are offered for
academic credit, both graduate and undergraduate. Some are non-credit presentations for
professional enrichment offering contact hours approved for continuing education by the Ohio
Nurses Association. These special courses, workshops and activities are designed to fit the needs
of professionals in many roles: practitioners, educators, administrators, supervisors, and others
in the nursing and health fields.
Activities can be for academic credit or for continuing education contact hours. Academic credit
options are those credit courses that are offered outside of the established curriculum in the
College of Nursing and Health. They are designed to offer post-degree academic experiences for
learners in a non-degree format. Academic credit courses meet the requirements of the college,
university, and the Ohio Board of Regents for credit granting courses. Contact hours for
continuing education are offered for those learning experiences that meet the criteria
established by the Ohio Nurses Association.
Organization
The Center for Continuing Nursing Education, Wright State University-Miami Valley College of
Nursing and Health (OH-217) is approved as a provider of continuing education by the Ohio Nurses

activities for contact hours undergo peer review within the College of Nursing and Health to assure
quality and conformance with the requirements set forth by the Ohio Nurses Association for

continuing education activities in the College of Nursing and Health. As such, the Center is
responsible for reviewing and approving all course proposals and expenditures processed through
the Center for Continuing Nursing and Health Education before any action is taken to confirm a
