WRIGHT STATE UNIVERSITY WELCOMES
LARGER FRESHMAN CLASS FOR 1998-99
Wright State University will welcome a larger freshman class when Welcome Week kicks off the new academic year. This year's class of about 2,221 freshmen compares with 2,024 in the freshman class that enrolled in September 1997.
According to a profile of incoming freshmen, the city of Dayton still provides the largest number of freshmen at 174. For the second year in a row, Cincinnati comes in second with 108, followed by Beavercreek (78), Columbus (54), Fairborn (52), Centerville (50), Huber Heights (44), Kettering (43) and Xenia (42).
This year's freshman class ranges in age from 17 to 49, of whom 57 percent are women and 12 percent are African American. The most popular of WSU's six colleges named as intended major was Liberal Arts, chosen by 16 percent. The College of Engineering and Computer Science was chosen by 15 percent, followed by Business and Administration (14 percent), Science and Mathematics (14 percent), Education and Human Services (12 percent), and Nursing and Health (5 percent). About 57 percent of the incoming freshmen reported that Wright State was their first choice. Some 28 percent are first generation college students.
