WRIGHT STATE ANNOUNCES
PROMOTIONS TO PROFESSOR

Wright State University has announced the promotion of several faculty members to the position of professor.

Vincent C. Yen, professor of management science and information systems, has served as associate professor at Wright State since 1988. Prior to this appointment Yen taught at the University of Dayton and was employed at the Ohio Department of Energy in the Division of Forecasting. He earned his bachelor's degree in mathematics from Taiwan Normal University, his master's in mathematics from the University of Oregon, and his doctorate in operations research from the Ohio State University. In 1995 he co-authored the book "Fuzzy Sets and Fuzzy Decision-Making" with X. H. Li. Yen also serves on the editorial advisory board of Annals of Cases on Information Technology and Management in Organizations and on the editorial review board of the Journal of End User Computing.

John M. Flach, professor of psychology, has been at Wright State University since 1990 and also serves as an adjunct research scientist at Wright Patterson Air Force Base. Flach earned his bachelor's degree in psychology from St. Joseph's College in Indiana, his master's in psychology from the University of Dayton, and his doctorate in human experimental psychology from The Ohio State University. He is a member of the Human Factors Society, the Southern Ohio Chapter of the Human Factors Society and the International Society for Ecological Psychology.

Steen Pedersen, professor of mathematics and statistics, was educated at Aarhus University in Denmark where he spent three years as an instructor at the mathematics institute. Pedersen has taught at Wright State for 10 years. He is the author of numerous articles and currently reviews papers for Mathematical Reviews.

Lawrence Prochaska, professor of biochemistry and molecular biology, has been a Wright State faculty member since 1980. He earned his bachelor's degree in biological sciences from Illinois State University and his doctorate in biochemistry from the Ohio State University. Prochaska completed his postdoctoral research at both Purdue University and at the University of Oregon. He is a member of the American Society for the Advancement of Science, the American Society of Biochemists and Molecular Biologists and Sigma Xi, and has served as president-elect of the Ohio-West Virginia Affiliate of the American Heart Association.

Robert W. Putnam, professor of physiology and biophysics, is responsible for research and for teaching graduate and medical students physiology. Putnam, who came to Wright State in 1986, earned his bachelor's degree in biology from Brown University, and his doctorate in biology from the University of California Los Angeles. He was awarded the Researcher of the Year Award from the Miami Valley Chapter of the American Heart Association in 1997, and was awarded the Wright State University Trustees' Award for Faculty Excellence in 1996. Putnam also is currently serving on the Editorial Board of the American Journal of Physiology and the Mid-American Research Consortium Peer Review Committee of the American Heart Association.

Robert J. Sweeney, professor of finance and financial services, also serves as chair of the department. He has been a member of the Wright State community since 1989 and currently serves as faculty president. Sweeney earned both his bachelor's and master's degrees in business at Wright State and his doctorate at South Carolina University. Sweeney was the recipient of the 1995 WSU Alumni Award for Teaching Excellence.

James E. Dobbins, professor of professional psychology, earned his bachelor's degree in psychology at The Ohio State University, and earned both his master's and doctorate in clinical psychology at the University of Pittsburgh. Dobbins has been with Wright State University since 1990. He is a recipient of the National Service Award and is a member of the Association of Black Psychologists.

Jan Gabbert, professor of classics, has served as chair of the department since 1986. She earned her bachelor's in history at Wright State and both her master's and doctorate in ancient history at the University of Cincinnati. Gabbert has taught in the WSU Department of Classics since 1977 and served as a special assistant to the dean of the WSU College of Liberal Arts in the early 1980s. A co-founder and life member of the WSU Alumni Association, she has served on the boards of the Alumni Association and the Friends of the Wright State University Libraries as well as the Midwest Space Development Conference. She also has been a regular volunteer for the city of Dayton and the Dayton International Airshow and Trade Exposition.
