WRIGHT STATE PROFESSOR APPOINTED EXAMINER
FOR 1999 MALCOLM BALDRIGE NATIONAL QUALITY AWARD
Joseph A. Petrick, Ph.D., an associate professor of management in Wright State University's College of Business and Administration, has been appointed to the 1999 Board of Examiners for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award by the director of the National Institute of Standards and Technology in the U.S. Department of Commerce. The award, created by public law in 1987, is the highest level of national recognition for performance excellence that a U. S. organization can receive. There are five categories— manufacturing, service, small business, education and health care—and any for-profit business headquartered in the United States is eligible to apply.
As an examiner, Petrick is responsible for reviewing and evaluating applications submitted for the award. Each is judged in seven categories: leadership, strategic planning, customer and market focus, information and analysis, human resource focus, process management and business results. The board is comprised of about 400 leading experts selected from industry, professional and trade organizations, education and health care organizations, and government.
Petrick has been active as a Baldrige examiner at the local level for the Quality Dayton Award and at the state level for the Ohio Award for Excellence. A member of Wright State's faculty since 1989, Petrick teaches courses on such subjects as quality business practices, business integrity, international management and organizational behavior. He co-authored Total Quality and Managing Human Resources with Diana S. Furr, and Total Quality and Organization Development with William A. Lindsay.
