Wright State Seniors Receive Commanding General's Award from U.S. Army. Five seniors in Wright State University's Army Reserve Office Training Corps (ROTC) have been awarded the "Commanding General's Award For Training Excellence" by Major General Stewart W. Wallace, the commanding general of US Army Cadet Command, for their outstanding performance at Cadet Command's Advanced Camp. Wright State is among only four of 92 schools within the Second Army ROTC Region to receive the prestigious award. Wright State has 39 students enrolled in its Army ROTC program.
Wright State Associate Professor of Psychology Receives National Educators' Award. Herbert A. Colle, Ph.D., has been awarded the 1999 Paul M. Fitts Education Award for exceptional contributions to the education of human factors and ergonomic specialists from the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society. An associate professor of psychology in Wright
State University's College of Science and Mathematics and a visiting scientist at the Air Force Research Laboratory, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Colle was honored at the society's
national meeting in Houston.
James Uphoff Named President-Elect of Ohio School Boards.James Uphoff, Ed.D, Professor Emeritus in Education and associate director for faculty development in the Center for Teaching and Learning at Wright State University, was recently named president-elect of the Ohio School Boards Association (OSBA). Uphoff will begin as president-elect in January, and become OSBA President in January 2001.
Hickey Named WSU's
Interim Assistant Vice President for Public Affairs. Robert E. Hickey Jr.,
a partner at Thompson Hine & Flory LLP, has been named interim
assistant vice president for public affairs at Wright State University,
effective Nov. 1. Hickey's law practice focused on state
government and legislative, administrative and regulatory law. From
1983 to 1992, he represented the Dayton 39th District in the Ohio

Award for Excellence. Willie Boyd, associate director for financial aid at Wright State
University, is the recipient of the President's Award for Excellence in Human Relations. The
award, presented at an annual ceremony by President Kim Goldenberg, recognizes staff members
for showing innovation, creativity, initiative and excellence, that has significantly improved

Howes Receives WSU President's
Award for Excellence. Joyce Howes, assistant dean in the College of Science and Mathematics
at Wright State University, is the recipient of the WSU President's Award for Excellence in
Service. The award, presented at an annual ceremony by WSU President Kim Goldenberg, was given
to Howes for her skills in teaching, administration and mentoring and her work on numerous
university committees, including a term as chair of the Unclassified Staff Advisory Council.

McBeath Receives WSU
President's Award for Excellence. Giorgio McBeath, assistant dean in the College of
Engineering and Computer Science at Wright State University, is the recipient of the
President's Award for Excellence in Innovation. The award, presented at an annual ceremony by
WSU President Kim Goldenberg, was given to McBeath for encouraging minority and female junior and senior

Wright State Students to
Receive Computer Software Free of Charge. Wright State and the 12 other members of the
Inter-University Council of Ohio (IUC), an association of Ohio's 13 public universities and two
stand-alone medical schools, have signed a new licensing agreement with Microsoft Corporation.
The three-year Education Select and Enterprise Enrollment Agreement allows Wright State and IUC
member schools to provide students with the most popular Microsoft products at a cost determined
by the university. Wright State opted to offer the software to its students free of charge. Ohio
is the first statewide system of universities to enter into this kind of agreement with Microsoft.

Wright State University
Launches New Online Program for Nurses. A new Wright State University program will soon
make it possible for nurses in Ohio to complete their bachelor's degrees in nursing online.
Thanks to a $1.125 million Department of Health and Human Services grant, Wright State
University's College of Nursing and Health is developing "Online Nurses: RN-BSN Program via
the Internet," a program that will make it possible, beginning next spring, for registered
nurses to complete their baccalaureate degrees in nursing any time or any place, with the

Wright State Awarded Grant
for Breast Cancer Community Advocacy Project. African American women are
more likely to die of breast cancer than any other racial or ethnic group. As National Breast
Cancer Awareness Month kicks off this month, Wright State University is doing its best to help
these women beat the odds with a $150,000 grant from the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer
Foundation. The grant will fund a community advocacy project to increase breast cancer
screening in a hard-to-reach segment of Dayton's population: African American women, 50-64,
who live in urban neighborhoods and have little or no health insurance. (10/12/99)

Wright State University. Brian E. Syska, a premedical major at Wright State University, has
been appointed to the WSU Board of Trustees as a student trustee.(10/12/99)
Wright State Offering New
Major in Industrial and Systems Engineering. This fall, Wright State University became the
first university in the Dayton region to offer an undergraduate degree in industrial and systems
engineering. With input from students, alumni and employers, a curriculum was developed that
gives students core knowledge in industrial engineering. Students may then choose one or four
focus tracks to complete the degree requirements. (10/12/99)
