WRIGHT STATE TWICE HONORED AT 20TH
MODEL UN COMPETITION IN NEW YORK

The Wright State University Model United Nations (NMUN) Team returned from their 20th competition in New York with two Distinguished Delegation awards, placing it among the top ten percent of schools receiving recognition for their performance at NMUN 1999.

“This was our first attempt at representing more than one country,” said Brice Thomas, who, with Donna M. Schlagheck, professor of political science, advised the Wright State team in its representation of Brazil and Chile. “Fewer than six of the 200 colleges and universities sending teams to the NMUN had teams large enough to represent more than one country.

“With 41 students, the challenge this year was to simultaneously put each delegation through exercises to test their research, knowledge and preparation.”

The WSU delegation included three students from Sinclair Community College and WSU students from Uganda, Cambodia, Palestine, India and Vietnam, and students with majors in business, history, education, political science and engineering.

Teams are judged on their diplomatic and negotiating skills, their overall knowledge of assigned topics, their ability to bring diverse viewpoints together and their ability to function in a team environment. “The NMUN experience gives students a greater awareness of the world around them,” said Thomas, who has been a faculty advisor to the team for four years and is a former undergraduate NMUN team member.

United Nations Secretary, General Kofi Annan, was the keynote speaker at this year’s NMUN, the largest on record, with 2,450 students participating.
