WRIGHT STATE COUPLE GETS
ENGAGED BY "THE ROCK"

The bride-to-be never expected a rock this big. "The Rock," a Wright State University campus landmark traditionally painted by students to tout campus activities and organizations, recently advanced the cause of true love. Matthew Jecker, a financial advisor for American Express, used paints and a brush to ask Jodi Richards, a manager at Burbank's restaurant, to marry him. On Saturday night, June 5, Matt drove Jodi by the rock to see his handiwork, and it was official: they were engaged.

Though Jodi accepted Matt's proposal immediately, she had a surprise for him. A few days later, she returned to the rock and painted her acceptance for all to see.

Though the couple had been looking at engagement rings prior to the rock painting, Jodi admits, "I was kind of in shock." She's doesn't think her fiance's offbeat proposal was out of character, but adds that some of his friends were surprised.

Jecker and Richards both graduated from Wright State in 1997. His degree is in financial services; hers is in sociology. The relationship got off to something of a "rocky" start. They met as freshmen when friends arranged a blind date at a soccer game. But there was one problem: Matt's roommate forgot to tell him he was being set up on a date, so Matt came to the game with another girl. Taking the first girl home before the game ended so he could return to be with Jodi didn't help Matt's stature in Jodi's eyes.

"Who is this jerk?," she recalls saying to herself. Nonetheless, they began dating a few months later, and the rest is history. The couple plans to be married next May.
